The two teams have met twice previously in competitive action – both matches coming in the 2001-02 Champions League group stage.
It finished 1-1 at the Nou Camp with goals from Christian Panucci and Patrick Kluivert whilst in the corresponding fixture at Stadio Olimpico, Roma ran out 3-0 winners with second-half strikes from Emerson, Vincenzo Montella and Damiano Tommasi.

Two of the the matches were played just a few days apart in Caracas in July 1953. The occasion was a tournament named in honor of the President of the Republic of Venezuela, a mini World Cup, with Roma representing Italy. The match on July 23 ended 1-0 to Barça, while the Giallorossi won 4-2 six days later.
On June 7, 1967, Roma won a friendly 2-1 at the Stadio Flaminio, a few weeks after the match between the two sides in Barcelona was postponed due to bad weather. The Giallorossi played at the Nou Camp for the first time on June 9, 1985, with the hosts winning 2-0.
Their most recent non-competitive fixture came at the Olimpico on October 4, 1994. The game ended 3-3, with Roma’s goals coming courtesy of Abel Balbo, Daniel Fonseca and a young Francesco Totti.
