Ahead of Feyenoord v Roma: the Giallorossi’s European record

Roma travel to Feyenoord on Thursday on the back of last week’s 1-1 draw at the Stadio Olimpico needing at least a score draw to progress to the Europa League last 16. Ahead of the game, we take a look at some of the Giallorossi’s recent results in European competition.

When the first leg at home ends in a draw…

Roma will be hoping to redress the balance in the Netherlands. On four previous occasions they have drawn the first leg in a European knockout tie, but only once have they advanced to the next round. That was against Lyon in 2007 (0-0 at the Olimpico followed by a 2-0 victory at the Stade Gerland). Twice the Giallorossi were eliminated on aggregate after the second leg and the other time they lost a coin toss after a play-off.

Here are those knockout ties in reverse chronological order:

2006/07 UEFA Champions League, round of 16: Roma 0-0 Lyon, Lyon 0-2 Roma
1999/00 UEFA Cup, round of 16: Roma 0-0 Leeds, Leeds 1-0 Roma
1991/92 Cup Winners’ Cup, quarter-final: Roma 0-0 Monaco, Monaco 1-0 Roma
1969/70 Cup Winners’ Cup, semi-final: Roma 1-1 Gornik, Gornik 2-2 Roma (no away goals rule, Gornik won a coin toss after the play-off on neutral turf in Strasbourg finished 1-1)

Recent away form in Europe

Roma’s last away win in Europe came on November 3, 2010. Jeremy Menez, Francesco Totti (penalty) and Leandro Greco were on target in a 2-3 victory over Basel in the Champions League group stage.

Since that triumph on Swiss turf, the Giallorossi have recorded three draws and three losses on the road.

In their last 30 European away days, Roma have recorded ten wins, nine of which with at least two goals scored. In reverse chronological order those nine games are: Basel (3-2), CSKA Sofia (3-0), Gent (7-1), Cluj (3-1), Bordeaux (3-1), Real Madrid (2-1), Dinamo Kiev (4-1), Lyon (2-0), Olympiakos (1-0) and Bruges (2-1).

European action in February

Considering both UEFA and non-UEFA competitions, the Giallorossi have played 17 European matches in the month of February, with a record of W6, D3, L8.

Their last five February outings have yielded a draw (1-1 last Thursday against Feyenoord) and four defeats (to Arsenal, twice to Panathinaikos and once to Shakthar Donetsk).

Roma’s most recent February success came in 2008 against Real Madrid (2-1, Pizarro and Mancini).

Roma’s record in last 32 of UEFA Cup/Europa League

The Giallorossi are competing in the last 32 of this competition for the 14th time (12 in the UEFA Cup and two in the Europa League) and have only been knocked out at this stage on two occasions. The first was in 1996/97 by German side Karlsruher SC (a 3-0 loss in Germany followed by a futile 2-1 victory back in Rome) and the second in 2009/10 at the hands of Panathinaikos (two 3-2 defeats).
