Napoli won the Serie A Week 28 match on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples, Italy.  The battle for the Scudetto is heating up! Napoli secured a vital three points by defeating Fiorentina 2-1. The goals came from Lukaku, Raspadori, and Gudmundsson. With this win, Napoli now has 60 points, just one point shy of Inter, who leads with 61 points.   Napoli also widening the gap over Atalanta and Juventus.

Fiorentina remains in seventh place, five points behind sixth-place Bologna. The Azzurri opened the scoring in the first half when Lukaku tapped in an easy goal after De Gea’s save on McTominay’s shot. In the 60th minute, the duo of Lukaku and Raspadori struck again, with Raspadori finding the net with a left-footed shot. Fiorentina attempted to make a comeback with a stunning curler from Gudmundsson, assisted by Kean, but Napoli held on to secure the win after more than a month.

Antonio Conte’s squad has been struggling lately, going five league matches without a win, which includes four draws and one loss. The last time the Azzurri secured a victory in Serie A was on January 25, when they triumphed over Juventus.

Napoli strikes first in the 26th minute as Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku finds the net with a powerful left-footed shot into the top right corner. The score is now Napoli 1 – 0 Fiorentina.

In a well-coordinated play, Napoli moved the ball through the three-quarter line, with Lukaku delivering a pass into the penalty area for Raspadori. The Italian striker managed to shake off the challenge from newcomer Pongracic and, in a one-on-one situation with De Gea, scored with a low left-footed shot that struck the crossbar. Napoli is up 2 – 0 over Fiorentina.

In the 66th minute, Fiorentina closed the gap when Albert Gudmundsson found the net with a right-footed shot aimed at the bottom right corner. Moise Kean provided the assist. Pongracic delivered a vertical pass to the edge of the area, where Kean cleverly back-heeled it to Gudmundsson, who then curled the ball from outside the box into the bottom right corner.

Napoli and Fiorentina have been very evenly matched in their last six Serie A matches: two wins each and two draws. After a 3-0 win in the first leg, the Neapolitans could win both league games against the Viola for the first time since 2020/21.

Napoli and Fiorentina have alternated one win each in their last six home matches against the Neapolitans in Serie A, with the Viola winning 3-1 on 8 October 2023 in the most recent one. The Tuscans have not won two away games in a row against the Campanians in Serie A since 1994 and 1995 (with Claudio Ranieri at the helm of the Viola).

For the first time, a team coached by Antonio Conte has gone five consecutive matches without a win in the top five European leagues: four draws and one defeat for Napoli in their last five Serie A matches. Their last league win dates back to 25 January against Juventus.

Napoli have drawn their last two league games at the Maradona (against Udinese and Inter, both 1-1), the Partenopei have not drawn at least three home games in a row in Serie A since the period between January and February 2010 with Walter Mazzarri at the helm (four in that case).

After defeats against Inter and Hellas Verona, Fiorentina could lose three away games in a row in Serie A for the first time since January and February 2024.

Romelu Lukaku (nine goals in the current championship) could reach double figures for goals for the 12th season in the Big 5 European leagues: since his first season on the scoresheet in these competitions (with West Bromwich in 2012/13), only Robert Lewandowski (13) has managed to do so in more different championships.

Matteo Politano has scored four goals against Fiorentina in Serie A (two with Sassuolo, one with Inter and one with Napoli), only against Milan and Genoa has he scored more in the top flight (five against both).
