Montella: "Stepped up a gear in the second half. A deserved win"

Vincenzo Montella commented on his side’s cup triumph over Roma at the Stadio Olimpico. “In the first half we kept the ball well but were lacking penetration. After the restart we were much more determined and played more consistently.” The coach then answered questions about matchwinner Mario Gomez and Juan Cuadrado. “That’s what we expect from Gomez. We know he’s lethal in the box. We said the same things when he was being denied by the woodwork. “Cuadrado is a fantastic footballer and I’m glad to have had the chance to coach him and perhaps help him develop his game. I wish him all the best, and I wish us all the best too!” Montella also spoke about the recent struggles of tonight’s opponents Roma. “They’ve been playing a very high level of football for two years now and it’s understandable that you get the occasional lull. They’re still a great side though.” On Fiorentina’s position in Serie A: “We have no regrets about our league campaign. Our position is in line with the level of our game and our targets for the season.” Finally, he was asked about Alessandro Diamanti, who is finding his feet at the club: “He’s playing in his position and he’s doing well. Now I expect Ilicic to get himself back on track – he can have a big say for us in that position too.”
