Beppe Iachini has expressed his satisfaction with the way his Fiorentina side reacted to going down to ten men against AC Milan on Saturday night, claiming that his team would have been worthy winners had they managed to complete a thrilling comeback.
“The most important thing is that the team always tackles adversity with our heads up and our chests out and always tries to get the win,” he said. “That’s our objective as a team, home and away. We always want to get the three points. The lads tried for that right until the end and that’s what I ask from them, even when we’re a man down. In terms of the clear chances, I think we would have deserved to win more than our opponents.”
Iachini went on to pinpoint a few areas where the team needs to improve.
“We weren’t troubled much at all and we didn’t give them many chances,” he said. “As I’ve said before, we need to improve the way we bring the ball out and our passing game, because often we make a mistake when we’re coming out from defence and that prevents us from getting up the pitch and building. That said, we had several chances in the first half.
“We started well after the break but sadly we conceded an unlucky goal – there was a half shout for a foul on [Gaetano] Castrovilli in the build-up. We need to be more focused but it was a bit of bad luck and that happens in football. Having said that, the team didn’t give up – that’s the spirit I want to see from the lads.”
Fiorentina have found things tough at the Franchi in some games this season, but Iachini stressed that his team are progressing well from a psychological perspective too.
“We need to keep working on the mental side of things because at times we don’t play directly enough and sometimes pass backwards,” he said. “Those are things we need to keep working on to ensure we keep progressing. We misplaced a few easy passes today but that’s something we’ll work on in training.”
