Diamanti: “I’m at a big club. I can’t wait to get out there and play”

Fiorentina's latest signing Alessandro Diamanti was unveiled to the media at the Stadio Franchi today.

What convinced you to come to Florence?
“When I heard Fiorentina were interested I didn't think twice about accepting their offer. I'm keen to get stuck into this new challenge.”

Can you help Gomez get out of this rut?
“I prefer not to talk about individuals. I saw a great game yesterday. I'm here to help the team, not any one single player. We all go through periods when things don't do as well but there will be no problems with Mario.”

This is something of a homecoming for you, isn't it?
“I came here as a youth player in 2002 and I hardly played at all for the first team. It's an honour to return ten years on because it means I've worked hard and improved over the years.”

Were Juve one of the teams interested in you?
“That's not something you say. There were a lot of clubs.”

Do you hope to get an Italy recall?
“You have to earn a call-up by playing well for your club.”

Montella?
“I spoke to him before coming to Florence. I'm here to help him.”

What sort of transfer deal have you joined on?
“It's a loan and Fiorentina have the option of making it permanent.”

Why did you choose the No. 18 shirt?
“There weren't many free numbers left. It was lots of reasons all put together.”

How come you've never played for a top team?
“I took my time but I got here in the end. I had chances before but I preferred to stay at Bologna.”

Who was your idol when you were young?
“Castelletti took me to the Franchi to see Fiorentina against AC Milan and I fell in love with Robbiati that day.”
