ON THIS DAY: BIG WINS ON THE EUROPEAN FRONT

MILAN – On this day 46 years ago, the 23rd of April 1969, the rossoneri defeated a Manchester United side with the likes of Bobby Charlton and George Best 2-0 at the San Siro in the first leg of the European Cup semi-finals. Sormani and Hamrin were on the score-sheet for Milan and laid the foundations for the qualification to the final.

Also on this day, but in 2003, Milan edged out Ajax in a five goal thriller, winning 3-2 in the second leg of the Champions League quarter finals and going through to the semi-finals where Milan would meet Inter. The win against the Dutch side was made even more special in light of all the absences due to injury and suspension, but Inzaghi (2) and Shevchenko ensured the rossoneri would progress regardless.
