Croatia 2 – 1 Morocco
7′ Joško Gvardiol 9′ Achraf Dari
42′ Mislav Oršić
🏆👉 Croatia won the FIFA World Cup Third Place defeating Morocco on Saturday 17 December 2022 at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar. Arguable, the match that no one would ever want to play: after the scorching eliminations suffered in the semifinals, Croatia and Morocco end their experience in the World Cup by challenging each other in the finals for third and fourth place. It’s a precious way to salute great Captain Luka Modric with a victory. A beautiful, vibrant, and uncertain match until the end also thanks to the clear minds of the two teams, who always faced each other head on. Two feats by Joško Gvardiol, who closes an extraordinary World Cup in the best possible way, and Mislav Oršić decide it. Achraf Dari is not enough for Morocco, but without a doubt, Morocco return home making history being the first African team to be among the top 4 in the World Cup.
Morocco stoic and in the match until the end was forced to surrender 0-2 with France: the goals by Theo Hernandez and Kolo Muani condemned the Lions of the Atlas to elimination. Croatia was swept away by Argentina: 3-0 the result in favor of Albiceleste, thanks to Messi’s penalty and Julian Alvarez’s brace.

✅ Stats before the game. This is the second meeting between Croatia and Morocco at this World Cup, following a 0-0 draw on matchday one of the group stage. In that match, Croatia recorded just five shots, their lowest in a World Cup match. Croatia have kept clean sheets in all three of their previous World Cup matches against African sides, beating Cameroon 4-0 in 2014, Nigeria 2-0 in 2018 and drawing 0-0 with Morocco this season.
None of their 19 previous World Cup third-place play-offs have ended in penalties, and only one has been decided in extra time (France-Belgium in 1986). A European national team has won this tie in all of the last 10 editions of the tournament, starting with Brazil’s 2-1 defeat of Italy in 1978. This will be Croatia’s second third-place final at the World Cup, having beaten the Netherlands 2-1 in the 1998 edition. Regardless of the result, Morocco’s participation in this match is the best result an African nation has ever achieved in World Cup history.
🏆👉 Lineup CROATIA (3-5-2): Livakovic; Stanisic, Sutalo, Guardiol; Orsic, Modric, Livaja, Kovacic, Perisic; Kramaric, Majer.
🏆👉 Lineup MOROCCO (4-3-3): Bounou; Hakimi, Dari, El Yamiq, Attiatallah; Amrabat, Sabiri, El Khannous; Ziyech, En Nesyri, Boufal.
