Atalanta won the UEFA Europa League Group Stage game, Matchday 2 on Thursday 5 October 2023 at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon, Portugal. Atalanta emerged victorious from Lisbon beating Sporting narrowly, with a 1-2 thanks above all to goals from Giorgio Scalvini and Matteo Ruggeri. After a super positive first half, a physiological decline in the Orobic team puts the home team back into the game. However, the penalty scored by Viktor Gyökeres was not enough for the Portuguese and they suffered their first defeat of the group.
In the next round of the Europa League, Atalanta will challenge Sturm Graz, while Sporting Lisbon will instead have to deal with Rakow.
Atalanta are unbeaten in their previous seven matches in the UEFA Europa League group stage between 2017/18 and 2023/24 (5W, 2D), becoming the team to have played the most matches in this stage of the competition without losing a single match.
Atalanta opened the score in the 33rd minute. Giorgio Scalvini defeated Sporting CP goalkeeper from very close range with a right-footed shot to the center. The assist is by Davide Zappacosta.

✅ Stats before the game: Sixth match in European cups between Sporting CP and Atalanta, the first since a 1-1 draw in the second leg of the quarter-finals of the 1987/88 Cup Winners’ Cup, which saw the Nerazzurri go through with an aggregate result of 3-1. These are Atalanta’s only precedents against Portuguese teams in Europe. Sporting CP have won only three of their last 29 matches in European cup competitions against Italian teams (D13, L13), but are unbeaten in six matches at home (W2, D4) since a 0-1 defeat against Udinese in August 2005. Sporting are unbeaten in seven home games in the UEFA Europa League (W4 D3), having won their last four in a row in the group stage following a 0-1 draw against Arsenal in 2018/19. Atalanta are unbeaten in their previous seven matches in the UEFA Europa League group stage between 2017/18 and 2023/24 (5W, 2D), becoming the team to have played the most matches in this stage of the competition without losing a single match. Atalanta finished with a clean sheet on the first day of this UEFA Europa League, but have not kept a clean sheet in two consecutive matches in European competitions since November-December 2019, against Dinamo Zagreb (2-0) and Shakhtar Donetsk ( 3-0) in the Champions League group stage.
