The UEFA Champions League, commonly referred to as UCL, is a yearly competition for club association football.  The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) organizes the Champions League. The tournament showcases top European clubs battling it out in a round-robin group stage. Following that, teams enter a two-legged knockout phase, which concludes with a single-leg final to crown the champion. The UEFA Champions League for the 2025/26 season is the 71st edition and the 34th since its rebranding as the UEFA Champions League. It is set to begin on 8 July 2025. As a result, the final will take place in Budapest, Hungary, on Saturday, 30 May 2026.

Twenty-nine teams qualified automatically, either through their domestic league placing or being holders of the Champions League (Paris Saint-Germain) or UEFA Europa League (Tottenham). Rebalancing was required as Champions League winners Paris also qualified automatically via their domestic league placing.

Two of the places were filled by the European Performance Spots, while the final seven slots will be determined via qualifying.

The Champions League, in its current format, starts in early July with three qualifying rounds followed by a play-off round.  They are all played over two legs. The seven teams that make it through join 29 others that have already qualified. Each of the 36 teams competes against eight different opponents, with four matches at home and four away. The top 24 teams advance to the knockout stage, culminating in the final match on May 31.  The Champions League winner secures a spot in the next year’s tournament, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Spanish clubs lead the way with a total of 20 victories, followed by England with 15 and Italy with 12. England boasts the most winning teams, with six clubs having claimed the title. In total, 23 clubs have won the competition.  A total of 13 of them achieving this feat more than once, and eight clubs have successfully defended their title. Real Madrid stands out as the most successful club in the tournament’s history.  Real Madrid have won it 15 times.  Chiefly, they got five consecutive victories in the first five editions and five wins in the last ten. Notably, Bayern Munich is the only club to have won every match in a single tournament.  This record occurred in the 2019–20 season.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti and the UEFA Champions League

Note: * Ancelotti’s coaching career at AC Milan is marked with significant achievements. This includes victories in both the 2002–03 Champions League and the 2002–03 Coppa Italia. The following season, he led the team to a Scudetto triumph, setting an Italian record of 82 points from 34 matches. Three years later, he secured his second Champions League title with the club.

Ancelotti is recognized as the most successful manager in the history of the UEFA Champions League, having won the trophy five times, in addition to two victories during his playing career. He is uniquely distinguished as the first and only manager to have overseen teams in six Champions League finals.

As a player, Ancelotti won the European Cup twice with AC Milan in 1989 and 1990, making him one of only seven individuals to have won the European Cup or Champions League in both capacities. Additionally, Ancelotti is the first manager to have won league titles across all of Europe’s top five leagues. He has triumphed in the FIFA Club World Cup three times and holds a joint record for the most UEFA Super Cup wins.  Ancelotti achieved this feat four times while managing Milan and Real Madrid.
