Lecce with a sprint won the Serie A Week 5 game on Friday 22 September 2023 at the Via del Mare Stadium in Lecce, Italy. The big surprise of this start of the championship, D’Aversa’s Lecce. The victory decided by the goal but also by the expulsion of Aaron Martin in the first half, which forced Genoa to play for almost an hour with 10 players. Gilardino’s team tried, they defended themselves, capitulating only in the 84th minute with the goal by Remi Oudin.

A start to the season for the Salento team with four games and no defeats, eight points gained; four for the Grifone who gain confidence after the excellent draw with Napoli.

Lecce opened the score in the 84th minute. Remi Oudin defeated Genoa goalkeeper Josep Martínez with a left-footed shot to the top right corner. The assist is by Valentin Gendrey. https://t.co/3M1xTPzdfy

✅   Stats before the game: Lecce have won only in one of the 14 Serie A matches against Genoa (2-1 on 7 January 1990, with Mazzone on the bench and goals from Barbas and Benedetti, while Fontolan scored for Grifone): in the other 13 games eight victories Ligurians and five draws. The last two top-flight matches in Salento between these two teams ended with a score of 2-2; in particular, Genoa has scored at least two goals in five of the last six Serie A away games at Lecce (3W, 3D). This is only the third time that Lecce has remained unbeaten in the first four matches of a Serie A championship, after 2001/02 and 2004/05: in its history the Apulian team has never remained without defeats in all of the first five matches played in a major tournament. With seven goals scored in the first four rounds of the championship, this is Lecce’s second best scoring start in their history in Serie A: the Salento team only did better in 2004/05 (11 goals in the first four matchdays). Lecce – two victories in the first two home games of this championship – have not won three consecutive home games in Serie A since the start of the 2004/05 tournament (victories against Brescia, Cagliari and Palermo); in that case they had also won the three closing home games of the previous season (therefore six victories in a row at home).
