Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Salernitana, 20th position with 13 points and a negative goal difference of -31
Monza, 11th position with 33 points and a negative goal difference of -5
Salernitana might be booking early their pass to Serie B next season. Salernitana lost the Serie A Week 26 game on Saturday 24 February 2024 at the Arechi Stadium in Salerno, Italy. What else to say about Salernitana and their performance? Salernitana have not won any of their last six home league matches (1N, 5P) and have always conceded at least two goals in the half: in their history in Serie A, they have never conceded more than one goal in consecutive home matches.
Salernitana are just living a nightmare. The fifth consecutive useful result and the second victory in a row for Monza after defeating AC Milan last week. Monza also found their fourth clean sheet in the last five matches and rose to 36 points in the standings, catching Torino in tenth place (who will play at Roma on Monday). A second defeat in two matches as coach of Salernitana, however, for Fabio Liverani, with the Granata team collecting the seventh defeat in eight matches in 2024 and thus remaining seven points from the safety zone, also risking seeing the margin increase in the event of victory of Cagliari (tomorrow on the pitch against Cagliari).
Everything happened in five minutes, with Monza scoring the two decisive goals for the victory between the 78th and 83rd minutes. Raffaele Palladino’s team also started strong in the first half, hitting the post after two minutes with Djuric and coming close to taking the lead in the 6th minute with Izzo, whose deflection from close range was blocked by Ochoa. The Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa was also the protagonist in the second half, when, in the 56th minute, he saved a shot from two steps by Gagliardini. Salernitana only became dangerous in the 77th minute with substitute Tchaouna, who twice had his shots blocked by Di Gregorio. A minute later, Maldini (another substitute) asks for a one-two from Gagliardini, receives the return touch in space and beats Ochoa with a right-footed shot to the far post. In the 83rd minute, Pessina also scored the final 0-2, doing well to put Di Gregorio’s clearance into the net with a lob, pushed by Djuric.
Monza opened the score in the 78th minute. Daniele Maldini defeated Salernitana goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa with a right-footed shot to the bottom right corner. The assist is by Roberto Gagliardini.

✅ Stats before the game: Monza has won four of the last five championship matches against Salernitana (1P) and in each of these successes they have scored exactly three goals; However, the Granata’s success in this partial came in the only away match played by the Brianza team in Serie A against the Campania team. Salernitana won the only previous home match played against Monza in Serie A, 3-0 on 26 February 2023; the Campania team has faced several times at home, always finding success in the competition only against Venice and Vicenza (2/2 in both cases). Monza won against Salernitana in both Serie A, Serie B and Serie C; in particular, with a success, that Campania team can become the first opponent against which the Brianza team records at least three victories both in the top championship and in the lower division. Monza have not found the net in four of their last five Serie A away games, as many games without a goal as in their previous 19 away games in the competition; in general, no team has finished more away matches in the current tournament without scoring than the Brianza team (seven, tied with Salernitana). Salernitana have lost 16 of their first 25 seasonal matches in two of the last three Serie A championships; the previous occasion, 2021/22, amounts to one of only five instances in the competition’s history where a team has avoided relegation after recording so many defeats at this point in the tournament.
