Monza, 16th position with 1 point and a negative goal difference of -1
Genoa, 2nd position with 4 points and a positive goal difference of +1

Monza’s home debut in this championship didn’t go as planned.  Monza lost the Serie A Week 2 game against Genoa CFC on Saturday 24 August 2024 at the U-Power Stadium.  Genoa, managed by Alberto Gilardino, celebrated their win after a commendable draw against Inter. For Monza, it was a tough pill to swallow, especially after their goalless start against Empoli last week. The match was decided by Pinamonti, further emphasizing Monza’s struggles in attack, while Genoa came out strong from a difficult match. Monza is left with just one point, while Genoa moves up to four points.

The upcoming matchday, Serie A Week 3 will see Fiorentina take on Monza and Genoa play against Hellas Verona.

Genoa took the lead just before the first half concluded. In the 45+7′, Andrea Pinamonti scored with a header to the bottom left corner. The assist was from Stefano Sabelli.

✅  Stats before the game

Monza have won their only two Serie A games against Genoa; in their previous 40 Serie B matches, the Lombardy team had only won three times (D13, L24). Monza have won two of their last three home games against Genoa between Serie A and Serie B (D1), as many wins as in their previous 18 home games against the Ligurians (D9, L7).
Between the end of last season and the start of this one, Monza did not score in three games in a row and have never gone four consecutive games without a goal in Serie A (three also in December 2023). Monza have lost four of their last six home games in Serie A (W1, D1), as many defeats as they suffered in their previous 17 home games in the competition (W7, D6).
Genoa drew their first game of this season (2-2 against Inter) and have only drawn their first two Serie A games of the season on two occasions so far: in 1992 and 1962. In the last Serie A, Genoa won their first away game of the season, after having obtained only two points in the previous five (2D, 3P); the Ligurians have not won their first away game for more than one consecutive season since the period between 2009 and 2011 (three with Gian Piero Gasperini and Alberto Malesani on the bench).
