The UEFA Nations League is an exciting new tournament for national teams, designed to replace friendly matches with more competitive games. This format enables countries to face off against teams of similar skill levels.

UEFA Nations League brief background

The UEFA Nations League is an international football tournament played every two years.  It features the senior men’s national teams from UEFA member associations, which is the governing body for football in Europe.

The competition follows a familiar UEFA format, starting with a league phase from September to November, followed by knockout rounds in March and June.

The fourth edition began with the league phase draw held in Paris on February 8, 2024. Matches for the league phase will take place in the autumn of 2024, while the finals tournament will occur from June 4 to June 8, 2025.

The Nations League aims to replace uncompetitive friendlies with meaningful matches against similarly ranked teams, featuring a league system that includes promotion and relegation. In the inaugural tournament, teams were split into 12 in League A, 12 in League B, 14 in League C, and 16 in League D. For the 2024/25 season, there are 16 teams in Leagues A, B, and C, and six in League D.
