Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Inter, 6th position with 8 points and a positive goal difference of +6
AC Milan, 10th position with 5 points and a positive goal difference of +3

AC Milan won the Serie A Week 5 game on Sunday 22 September 2024 at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in Milan, Italy.  Milan clinched a thrilling victory in a captivating match claiming the bragging rights to rule in the City of Milan. The Rossoneri celebrated a triumphant return in the Derby di Milano, sealing the win in dramatic fashion. In a nail-biting finish, Mattia Gabbia scored in the dying moments, capitalizing on Frattesi’s hesitation and outsmarting the unsuspecting goalkeeper Yann Sommer. After an exciting first half featuring goals from Christian Pulisic and Federico Dimarco, Gabbia’s second-half strike proved crucial for this significant win. AC Milan can now take a deep breath and aim to continue their ascent in the standings.

Preioulsy, Inter had won the last six derbies against Milan in all competitions, with an overall score of 14-2, the Nerazzurri’s all-time record for consecutive victories against the Rossoneri. Overall, no Milanese team has ever achieved seven consecutive victories in the history of the Derby della Madonnina in all competitions – six in a row is also the record for Milan (twice, between 1911 and 1913 and between 1946 and 1948). It all changed today with AC Milan claiming the victory.

The beginning of the match

What a fantastic run by the American midfielder!  In the 10th minute, Christian Pulisic skillfully maneuvered through the Nerazzurri defense, evading at least three players before finding himself face-to-face with Sommer, ultimately giving the Rossoneri the lead.

Inter leveled the score at 1-1 in the 27th minute when Federico Dimarco found the back of the net with a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner, assisted by Lautaro Martínez.

In a thrilling finish, AC Milan reclaimed the top spot in the 89th minute when Matteo Gabbia found the net with a powerful header into the bottom right corner. Tijjani Reijnders provided the perfect cross for the assist.

Stats before the game

Inter have won nine of their last 14 derbies against Milan in Serie A (D2 L3): in the period (since 2017/18), only against Udinese and Hellas Verona (10 against both) have the Nerazzurri achieved more successes, and only against Genoa (31) and Sampdoria (30) have they scored more goals than against the Rossoneri (29) in the top flight.

Milan have won a maximum of five points from their first four Serie A games for the first time since 2018/19 (1W, 2D, 1L in that case too) and the last time they failed to go over the five-point threshold after their first five games of a single season dates back to 2013/14 (1W, 2D, 2L in that case, with Massimiliano Allegri on the bench).

Inter have drawn four of their last six Serie A games (2W): as many draws as they had collected in their previous 28 games in the tournament (23W, 4D, 1L).

Among managers who have participated in over five Derby della Madonninas in all competitions, only Árpád Weisz has a better success rate than Simone Inzaghi. Weisz achieved a success rate of 67% with 8 wins out of 12 matches, while Inzaghi has a 64% success rate with 7 wins out of 11. If Inzaghi secures a victory, he will tie with Helenio Herrera and Árpád Weisz for second place in the all-time list of successful managers in the Milan derby, each with eight wins, trailing only Carlo Ancelotti, who has 10.

Before the match, Marcus Thuram was honored with the Player of the Month award for August.

Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Lecce, 14th position with 4 points and a negative goal difference of -5
Parma, 12th position with 4 points and a negative goal difference of -1

Lecce and Parma ended the Serie A Week 5 with a draw on Saturday, 21 September 2024, at the Via Del Mare Stadium in Lecce, Italy.  Surely, it was a thrilling encounter, leaving Lecce and Parma each with a well-deserved point!  The match was truly intense and not for the faint-hearted!

Patrick Dorgu set the tone by scoring in the first half, but the second half was packed with drama! Amazingly, both teams faced a red card (Guilbert for one team and Cancellieri for the other), and Krstovic made it 2-0, only to miss a couple of golden opportunities for a third goal. Those mistakes proved to be pivotal, as Almqvist scored during injury time, and just seconds later, Hainaut found the net with a header to level the score.

Parma has kicked off their season on a high note, celebrating a win against Milan and a solid draw at home against Fiorentina. However, after a tough away game in Naples where they played with just ten players for much of the second half, they faced a disappointing comeback loss at Tardini against Udinese. Now, as they head to Via del Mare, the team is eager to bounce back and prove themselves.

Stats before the game.

Of the teams faced more than 20 times in Serie A, Lecce is the one against which Parma boasts the highest percentage of victories: 54%, thanks to 13 wins in 24 matches (9D, 2P) – in particular, the Emilians have won all of the last three matches against the Apulians and have never reached four wins in a row.

After at least one of the two teams failed to score in three of the first four Serie A matches between Lecce and Parma at the Giallorossi’s home, in all of the last eight in Salento both opponents have found the back of the net, for a total of 29 goals, an average of 3.6 per match.

Buy Serie A tickets for every Italian League football match

Lecce have scored just one goal in their last seven Serie A matches (Krstovic against Cagliari) and in the period since 13 May, no team from the top five European leagues and present in both seasons in the top flight has scored so few. Lecce won their last home Serie A game (1-0 against Cagliari) and have not achieved at least two consecutive home wins in the competition since the start of the 2023/24 championship (three in a row with Roberto D’Aversa on the bench). After remaining unbeaten in the first two matchdays of the championship (1W, 1D), Parma have lost the most recent two; in both of the last two Serie A championships played (2019/20 and 2020/21) the Gialloblù have suffered three defeats in the first five matchdays.

Parma have conceded goals in all of their last 27 away matches in Serie A and among the teams currently in the top division, they are the one with the longest open streak; in general, the other worst open streaks are those of Casale, Cremonese, Lecco, Messina, Pro Patria and Reggiana.
