Benfica triumphed over Bayern Munich in a FIFA Club World Cup Group C match on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, held at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. Andreas Schjelderup netted a goal in the 13th minute, putting Benfica ahead 1-0. This victory propelled Benfica to the top of Group C, qualifying them for the Round of 16. This also marked Benfica’s first-ever win against Bayern, and they will now face either Chelsea or Esperance de Tunis in the knockout stage. Bayern, finishing in second place, will go up against Group D leaders Flamengo.

The defeat pushed Bayern Munich down to second place, but they also qualified for the Round of 16. Boca Juniors was eliminated after a 1-1 draw with Auckland City.

The match took place in sweltering 97-degree heat (36 Celsius). Consequently, Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni required medical attention in the 25th minute due to heat-related issues and was substituted in the 55th minute by Orkun Kökçü.

Despite a late surge that included a disallowed goal, Bayern suffered their first loss of the tournament.

Auckland City and Boca Juniors finished their match in a 1-1 draw during the FIFA Club World Cup Group Stage on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. This draw resulted in both teams being eliminated from the tournament. Christian Gray scored the first goal for Auckland City early in the second half, but a 50-minute lightning delay interrupted the game.

Boca Juniors let down their fans who were hoping for a victory. Their chances of qualifying depended on other match results, but there was still a flicker of hope. Unfortunately, the outcome of the Benfica vs. Bayern Munich match ultimately changed Boca’s situation in Group C.

In a historic first, Benfica managed to defeat Bayern Munich 1-0. This result sent both the Portuguese and German teams into the Round of 16, officially eliminating Boca Juniors from the tournament. Boca Juniors became the first CONMEBOL team to be eliminated in the opening round of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.
