Lazio won the UEFA Champions League Group Stage Matchday 2 on Wednesday 4 October 2023 at the Olimpico di Roma Stadium in Rome, Italy. Surely, this is a special victory snatched at the very last minute to secure the 3 points. Sarri draws the jokers from the bench, it is Pedro who gives the first victory of the season in the Champions League with a precise header at the end of time on a cross from Guendouzi. Celtic were bitter after seeing their 2-1 annulled by VAR (Palma offside) in a substantially balanced match.

For the record, Lazio have scored 2 of the 3 late goals in the agonizing minutes during this UEFA Champions League 23/24. Today, Pedro (94’57”), and the one by goalkeeper Ivan Provedel (94’20”). The other is the Teze’s one vs Sevilla (94’37”).

Third matchday in three weeks: Celtic will host Atletico Madrid while Lazio will visit Feyenoord.

Lazio, after having made an impact in their debut match against Atletico thanks to Provedel’s memorable goal, faced the green and whites, defeated in double numerical inferiority by Feyenoord 2-0.

Celtic opened the score in the 13th minute. Kyogo Furuhashi defeated Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel with a right-footed shot to the center. The assist is by Matt O’Riley.

Lazio equalized in the 29th minute. Matías Vecino defeated Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart from very close range with a headed shot to the bottom left corner. The assist is by Alessio Romagnoli following a corner conceded by Alistair Johnston.

Lazio scored the winning goal in the very last minute! Yep, in the 96th minute, Pedro scored with a headed shot to the bottom right corner. The assist is by Mattéo Guendouzi.

Stats before the game: Celtic won both previous matches played against Lazio: 2-1 victory, both home and away, in the group stage of the 2019/20 Europa League. Lazio have not won in 11 matches (D4, L7) against British teams in all competitions, i.e. since the 2-1 success, away to Chelsea, in March 2000, in the Champions League. Celtic have won just one of their last 22 Champions League games (D5, L16), and are winless in their most recent 11 games (D2, L9), since a 3-0 win at Anderlecht in September 2017. Celtic have not won in 10 home games (D2, L8) in the Champions League, and have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last 15 games at Celtic Park. Only four teams have recorded a longer streak of consecutive home matches without a win in the competition: FCSB (13, 1996-2013), Lille (13, 2006-2021), Club Brugge (12, 2016-2020) and Spartak Moscow (11 , 2001-2006). Lazio are unbeaten in their last seven matches (2W, 5D) of the Champions League group stage; the Biancocelesti have only gone on a longer run without defeat at this stage of the tournament once, namely in the first eight matches (including the second group stage) in the 1999-2000 competition. Lazio have won only one of their last 16 away games (D5, L10) in the Champions League, remaining without success in their last nine, i.e. since the 2-0 victory at Besiktas in September 2003.

🏆👉   Lineup CELTIC (4-3-3): Hart – Johnston A., Phillips, Scales, Taylor – O’Riley, McGregor, Hatate – Maeda, Furuhashi, Yang.
