AS Roma lost the UEFA Europa League, League Phase, Matchday 2, on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at the Olimpico di Roma Stadium in Rome. Following their league loss to Torino, Roma faced their second defeat of the season in front of their home supporters. In their second Europa League match against Lille, something unusual occurred: Gasperini's squad lost 1-0 and failed to convert a penalty (due to a handball in the penalty area by Mandi), which the referee had to retake three times. Initially, two attempts from Dovbyk and then a penalty kick from Soulé could not get past goalkeeper Ozer, who misjudged his foot placement, keeping it over the line, which led to a VAR review.
The match was determined by Haraldsson's goal just six minutes in, resulting from a significant defensive blunder by Tsimikas. The Giallorossi are still on three points, which they secured in their first match against Nice away. On Sunday, they will take on Fiorentina at the Franchi stadium for the sixth matchday of Serie A.
Lille took an early lead, quieting the Roma Stadium in the 6th minute. Hákon Haraldsson netted a right-footed shot from the center of the box into the top right corner. A defensive mistake by Tsimikas allowed Haraldsson the opportunity to put the French team ahead, even though El Aynaoui attempted to rectify the situation.

Both teams are eager to advance directly to the last 16, so they will be motivated to maintain their momentum after winning their opening match. Preview before the game. Roma is preparing to take on French rivals for the second consecutive week, having triumphed over Nice at Allianz Riviera last Wednesday, where they achieved a record-tying 98th Europa League victory. New manager Gian Piero Gasperini, who famously led Atalanta BC to success in 2024, has returned to UEFA's second-tier competition with a 2-1 win in southern France.
