AS Roma lost the UEFA Europa League, League Phase, Matchday 2, on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at the Olimpico di Roma Stadium in Rome. Following their league loss to Torino, Roma faced their second defeat of the season in front of their home supporters. In their second Europa League match against Lille, something unusual occurred: Gasperini's squad lost 1-0 and failed to convert a penalty (due to a handball in the penalty area by Mandi), which the referee had to retake three times. Initially, two attempts from Dovbyk and then a penalty kick from Soulé could not get past goalkeeper Ozer, who misjudged his foot placement, keeping it over the line, which led to a VAR review.

The match was determined by Haraldsson's goal just six minutes in, resulting from a significant defensive blunder by Tsimikas. The Giallorossi are still on three points, which they secured in their first match against Nice away. On Sunday, they will take on Fiorentina at the Franchi stadium for the sixth matchday of Serie A.

Lille took an early lead, quieting the Roma Stadium in the 6th minute. Hákon Haraldsson netted a right-footed shot from the center of the box into the top right corner. A defensive mistake by Tsimikas allowed Haraldsson the opportunity to put the French team ahead, even though El Aynaoui attempted to rectify the situation.

Both teams are eager to advance directly to the last 16, so they will be motivated to maintain their momentum after winning their opening match. Preview before the game. Roma is preparing to take on French rivals for the second consecutive week, having triumphed over Nice at Allianz Riviera last Wednesday, where they achieved a record-tying 98th Europa League victory. New manager Gian Piero Gasperini, who famously led Atalanta BC to success in 2024, has returned to UEFA's second-tier competition with a 2-1 win in southern France.

AS Roma Coach Gian Piero Gasperini determined to shine with the Roman Gladiators despite this defeat.

Stats before the game

This marks the inaugural encounter between Roma and Lille in European competitions. Roma has only lost two out of their 12 matches against French teams in major European tournaments (W7 D3), managing to keep a clean sheet in six of those games.

On the other hand, Lille has suffered just three defeats in their 12 matches against Italian teams in major European competitions (W6 D3), remaining unbeaten in their last four encounters since a 2-1 loss to Inter in November 2011.

Since March 2017, Roma has lost only two of their 32 UEFA Europa League home games (W24 D6), netting at least three goals in 14 of those matches during this period in the competition.

Following their 2-1 win over Brann, Lille could achieve consecutive UEFA Europa League victories for the first time since the 2009/10 season (against Slavia Prague and Fenerbahçe).

After a 2-1 triumph against Nice on Matchday 1, Roma has the chance to win both of their initial Europa League/UEFA Cup matches of the season for only the second time in their last 10 seasons in the competition, following the 2023/24 season.

All of Roma's last six goals in the Europa League have been scored in the second half, with three of them occurring in the final 10 minutes.
Lille could also win both of their first two matches in major European competitions this season for the first time in their history.

Roma's last seven goals in the Europa League have been netted by seven different players: Dybala, Pisilli, Angeliño, Shomurodov, Paredes, Ndicka, and Mancini.
