On Thursday, September 25, 2025, Genoa triumphed over Empoli in the Coppa Italia Round 2 at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium in Genoa. With a 3-1 win against Empoli, Genoa secured their spot in the Round of 16. They will be up against Atalanta in December's round of 16. In the stands were family members of the Rossoblu legend, Julio Cesar Abbadie.
Empoli initially took the lead in the first half thanks to a free kick from Saporiti. However, Frendrup brought the score level with a low left-footed shot following a through ball from Colombo. In the second half, Genoa extended their lead with a header from Marcandalli. In the closing minutes, substitute Ekhator netted a hat-trick to clinch the win.
Empoli gained the advantage in the 12th minute. Edoardo Saporiti netted a goal from a free kick, using his right foot to beat Genoa's goalkeeper Nicola Leali in the bottom left corner.

Genoa leveled the score in the 15th minute. Morten Frendrup found the net with a left-footed strike from the left side of the box into the bottom left corner, thanks to an assist from Lorenzo Colombo. There was nothing that Empoli's goalkeeper Samuele Perisan could do about it.

Genoa changed the game in the 56th minute. Alessandro Marcandalli netted a header from just a few feet away into the bottom right corner. The goal was set up by Lorenzo Venturino, who provided a headed assist after a corner given away by Brando Moruzzi.


The final score was completely in favor of Genoa in the 83rd minute. Jeff Ekhator netted a goal with a right-footed shot from very close to the center of the goal. He was assisted by Morten Thorsby, who provided a headed pass.
