Italy get off to great start in Under-21 European qualifiers by beating Slovenia

The U21 side kicked off the new campaign in Reggio Emilia, the place where they previously qualified for the 2015 EUROs by beating Slovakia 3-1 in the qualifying play-off. The Mapei Stadium seems to bring the Azzurrini luck, as they’ve won their last three games there. Di Biagio opted for a 4-3-3 formation with Cragno starting in goal, in front of him a four man defence with Conti, Rugani, Romagnoli and Murru. Benassi, Mandragora and Cataldi made up the midfield, while Monachello, Bernardeschi and Boateng played up front.
Italy had some problems in the early stages of the game due to Slovenia’s counter attacks, but the Azzurrini then began dictating play, leading to some good chances. Boateng had two of them in the 10th and 17th minute. Cataldi then almost gave Italy the lead in the 27th minute, but his effort went just wide. Slovenian keeper Zabret then made three saves from shots by Bernardeschi, Rugani and Romagnoli.
Italy kept pushing in the second half and Bajric’s foul on Murru gave the Azzurrini the opportunity to take the lead from the penalty spot. Bernardeschi took charge of the spot kick in the 51st minute and converted it, sending the keeper the wrong way. The Fiorentina striker could have doubled their lead ten minutes later, but he hit the post.
Di Biagio’s side were clearly the better team on the pitch and had many other chances to add another, but they were unable to capitalize on such a huge amount of opportunities.
“I saw a good Italy team, but we were much better in the second half. The pace of the game was too slow in the opening stages and my players were not able to do what they wanted to do. We have to improve our playing style and we absolutely have to avoid missing so many of the chances we create, that’s always a dangerous situation. Anyway, I’m pleased with the performance. The players all suffered cramp at the end of the match, meaning they gave their all,” said head coach Di Biagio after the final whistle.   ]]>
