Italy beat hosts Serbia and Austria in their first two games and knew that a draw would be enough to see them reach this summer’s European Championship, which is being hosted in Israel. Italy took the lead through Valentina Bergamaschi’s 22nd minute header. They controlled the game but Blackstenius levelled against the run of play with 20 minutes left to play. Italy remained on course for the tournament until the final minute when Blackstenius grabbed her second of the afternoon.
“It's a real pity. I can’t blame my team. The players gave everything and we deserved to qualify. We performed well during the three games; we were at the same level with Sweden. Two key moments cost us the game,” explained Italy coach Corrado Corradini
