Italy with the “rebuilding phase” starts the UEFA Nations League game with a draw against Germany on Saturday 4 June 2022 at the Renato Dall’Ara Stadium in Bologna, Italy.  This is a motivating 1 point to boost the morale of the team after losing the Finalissima against Argentina on June 1.  Coach Roberto Mancini reached the milestone of 50 matches as Italy head coach and made a dream come true for 6 players allowing their debut with the Italian team.

After Matchday 1, Italy stand third place with 1 point same as Germany.  Hungary lead in the 1st position with 3 points and England in the last position without points.

Italy have not faced Germany since 15 November 2016, in a friendly match that ended 0-0 under Giampiero Ventura. Italy have not won against the Germans since the 2012 European Championship (2-1 with a brace from Mario Balotelli); three draws (including a 1-1 draw against Germany in the quarter-finals of the 2016 European Championship, which then saw the Azzurri lose on penalties) and one defeat since then.  After the 0-0 in November 2016, Italy could run out of goals for two consecutive matches against Germany for the first time since 1996 (0-2 and 0-0 under Arrigo Sacchi’s management).

Italy opened the score in the 70th minute. It is Lorenzo Pellegrini to defeat Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer from very close range with a right-footed shot to the high center. The assist is by Degnand Wilfried Gnonto.

Stats: Italy are unbeaten in five games played in Bologna (3W, 2N) – the last defeat dates back to 14 October 1989, against Brazil in a friendly match (0-1) – that was one of only two occasions (out of 22) in which the Azzurri did not find the goal in this city (the other in 1927, always 0-1 against Austria).
