👉 Italy lost the UEFA Euro 2024 Qualifiers against England on Tuesday 17 October 2023 at the Wembley Stadium in London, England. The English achieved qualification by taking advantage of the defensive ingenuity of the Azzurri who dropped noticeably in the second half. England Captain Harry Kane with a brace and a goal from Marcus Rashford overturned Gianluca Scamacca’s momentary advantage. We might argue that Spalletti’s substitutions were not right. Moreover, legitimate protests for the failed expulsion of Phillips, who was pardoned by the referee Turpin.
Italy, overtaken by Ukraine, will return to the field in a month. The matches against North Macedonia and the direct clash with Ukraine will be decisive.
Italy opened the score in the 15th minute. Gianluca Scamacca defeated England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford from very close range with a right-footed shot to the high center. The assist is by Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

✅ Stats before the game: Italy lost the last match played against England, on 23 March 2023 (2-1 with goals from Retegui, Rice and Kane); only once have the Azzurri lost two matches in a row against their matchday opponents, between 1948 and 1949. Excluding friendlies, after winning four of the first five matches against England (L1), Italy achieved only two successes in the next eight (D4, L2). Excluding friendlies, England and Italy have met on English soil four times: in addition to the European Championship final on 11 July 2021 (Azzurri won on penalties), a success for each side in 1977 and 1997 (0-1 in London with Zola’s goal in World Cup qualifying), followed by a draw (0-0 on 11 June 2022). Italy has won 35% of the matches against England, considering all competitions (11W, 11N, 9L); among the teams faced at least 30 times by the English, only Germany boasts a higher success rate (37%). Excluding friendlies, Italy have kept a clean sheet in 12 of their last 14 away matches, conceding six goals in the remaining two; the Azzurri conceded a goal in the most recent one, against North Macedonia, and have not conceded a goal for two away games in a row since September 2019. Italy have not lost any of their last 22 away games played in European Championship qualifying (17W, 5D) – the last defeat was a 3-1 against France in September 2006; if they were to avoid defeat, they could set a new record of unbeaten away from home in qualifying matches for the top continental tournament: it has currently equaled Romania’s 22, between 1991 and 2007.England have won all of their last 12 home matches in the European Championship qualifiers, with an aggregate score of 47-4, a run in which they also kept a clean sheet on 10 occasions; the last time the Three Lions did not find success in this type of match dates back to 4 June 2011, against Switzerland (2-2). Harry Kane has been involved in 10 goals in his last eight appearances for England (eight goals and two assists), including one against Italy: if he scores, he would become the first English player capable of scoring more than one center against the Azzurri since the start of the quest
🏆👉🏴 Lineup ENGLAND (4-2-3-1): Pickford – Walker, Stones, Maguire, Trippier – Phillips, Rice – Rashford, Bellingham, Foden – Kane.
🏆👉🇮🇹 Lineup ITALIA (4-3-3): Donnarumma – Di Lorenzo, Scalvini, Acerbi, Udogie – Frattesi, Cristante, Barella – Berardi, Scamacca, El Shaarawy.
