Conte went on to say “From every point of view Italy played well tonight. We were better in terms of intensity, possession, style and the number of chances created. We need to be more clinical. When you create as many chances as we did, you need to convert more. Conceding two goals in the way we did was annoying. This was annoying, as was the final result. We should have won the game.”
In Conte’s opinion the Marchisio story, Buffon’s illness and the weather conditions had no influence on proceedings: “Our team was not impacted by these things. We are used to situations like this. We need to remain focussed and sticking to what we know. We remain united, despite what other people say, in order to put in good performances.”
Croatia now top the group ahead of the Azzurri, which doesn’t bother Conte: “They have proven that they are better than Italy so far and deserve their place at the top of the table. We are challenging with Norway and Croatia for the qualification spots. We will do what we can to close the gap on them.”
Eder was delighted to score the equaliser on his debut: “It’s a great time for me. I’m very happy to have helped my team today. As the head coach has already said, it’s always been difficult for us here. We could have scored again after I equalised. What can I say? I’m very happy to have scored for such a prestigious side. Getting selected for the squad could happen to anyone, staying in the set-up is tough. The lads gave me a warm welcome. I hope that I will be selected again in the future.”
