Lazio won the Coppa Italia Frecciarossa Round of 16 on Tuesday 5 December 2023 at the Olimpico di Roma Stadium in Rome, Italy. The victory secured Lazio the qualification to the Quarterfinals and awaits the outcome of the match between Roma and Cremonese, which will be played on Wednesday 3 January, to find out who they will face in the quarter-finals.
The goal that decides the match comes after just 5 minutes when Pellegrini recovers the ball in the offensive phase on the left-handed lane, then crosses to the center where at the edge of the area Guendouzi is ready and opens the right plate and beats Leali towards the far post. Genoa tries to react but never finds conclusions that really put Provedel in difficulty. In the final it was Lazio who came close to doubling their lead several times, finally settling for a narrow victory.
To reach the round of 16, Genoa had to face two matches that seemed easy on paper but which presented notable pitfalls. Gilardino’s team beat Modena 4-3 on August 11th, then Reggiana 2-1 only after extra time. Lazio is experiencing a period of ups and downs, but in the last week the Biancoceleste team reached the Champions League round and beat Cagliari 1-0 at home, bringing Atalanta to 20 points. Sarri’s Lazio debuts in the Italian Cup against Gilardini’s Genoa, who are in their third match of the season in this competition.
Lazio opened the score in the 5th minute. Mattéo Guendouzi defeated Genoa goalkeeper Nicola Leali with a right-footed shot to the bottom right corner. The assist is by Luca Pellegrini.
