Italian Soccer Serie A
The Lega Serie A has announced the rule changes for the 2025-26 season for postponed or interrupted games. As a result, changes include on how to handle matches that are interrupted or postponed, with the goal of resuming play within 24 hours.
Last season, there were multiple instances where games were delayed due to weather alerts or other events. As a result, these decisions leading to a chaotic fixture schedule and challenges in rearranging matches.
Consequently, the clubs have united to approve a new set of regulations aimed at simplifying the process. Most importantly, at least providing clearer guidelines when such situations arise.
Serie A rules for postponed fixtures
The Lega Serie A emphasizes that matches postponed before kick-off must be played within the next 24 hours, unless there are exceptional circumstances. For instance, having an unsuitable pitch, coinciding with international duty breaks, or matches being too closely scheduled.
- Solution in such cases, the Lega Serie A will determine the rescheduling at the earliest possible time.
- There must be a minimum of two free days guaranteed between fixtures for both teams involved.
Meanwhile for matches that have been interrupted, the same rule from last season applies. That is, meaning they will resume exactly where they left off.
- For instance, if a match was stopped after 80 minutes, the teams will return to play the remaining 10 minutes plus stoppage time.
- The goal here is also to resume play the day after the interruption.
- There are a few modifications to the rules, allowing clubs to introduce up to three new players who were signed after the interruption. Most importantly, provided they did not transfer from the opposing team in the match. However, players who were sent off, substituted, or suspended during the original game cannot be reintroduced.
