STAY UNITED

MILAN – Cristian Brocchi faced the press on Saturday ahead of the round 36 Serie A match with Frosinone scheduled for Sunday at 15.00 at the San Siro. This is what the coach had to say:
"I want to see my team play with the right spirit. They have given me positive signs in training this week and I hope they can now do the same in the match with Frosinone. In the testing situations, the team falls apart and this makes matters worse. In football, you have to resolve problems as a group, not as individuals. We will have to see if everyone is aware of this issue. Every team encounters difficulties, but those that stay united emerge successfully. Our players have the strength to resolve any problem, but they have to work as one. When our attackers go in search of a goal, the rest of the team needs to push up and stay compact. Balance is needed with the formation I want to play. When we find ourselves open to a counter-attack and in numerical inferiority at the back, it is the fault of a player or the team, not the formation. It’s my task to ensure the players get to grips with this. They are capable of reading the game. I have taught younger players and so I am sure that I can do the same with the first team.
"Even the very best coaches experience some difficulties at the start. Sacchi, Guardiola and even Sarri at the start of this season. But I don’t want to use this as an excuse. My aim now is to help the team and with my ideas of football. I prefer to watch Barcelona or Bayern Munich, Napoli, Empoli or Sassuolo. On the subject of Sassuolo, Di Francesco was at one point sacked before being reinstated. He was given time. I don’t want a team that sits deep and plays on the counter-attack. I have a completely different idea of how I want to play. I don’t know if I will achieve in my mission, but I have my ideas. Everyone has his vision of how the game should be played. I look back at yesterday’s youth derby and I can safely say that I enjoyed it. Milan didn’t win, but they played well. I was not surprised that Honda was one of the better performers last week. I am evaluating every player in the squad and Honda is a model professional and a very intelligent person. Like lots of others he was given a chance and he will have more of them in the future. Balotelli has to simply focus on repeating what he has done in training this week, be determined and enterprising. He has to think that there is an important match to be played tomorrow. I hope he can get back to scoring ways and show what he is capable of. "The result is always key in Italy. The main thing tomorrow is to come away with the 3 points. I won’t ask my team to sit back. I am not surprised by Donnarumma. But I don’t want to take credit for him. I was the one who took the criticism for bringing him into the Milan U19s. We have to allow for young players to make mistakes. If a player never makes a mistake, he won’t understand the right way to react. We are happy to have carried out a good job at youth level. Should we fail to reach Europe, then the fault would lie with me and the rest of the players. My staff and I are giving 100%. For Bacca, the rabona is a natural move and he instinctively does it. At this moment in time he is bring criticised because he isn’t scoring regularly but 15 goals isn’t a small total in my view. I hope he and the rest of the squad can improve. This is a tough moment for everyone. I repeat, I am responsible for the situation.
"The President wants to see a different Milan and one that wins. Despite the criticism that is being directed towards him, no one loves the club as much as him. Playing for Milan means being able to handle the pressure of San Siro, in the good and the bad times. We can’t expect the fans to be happy and it’s down to us, through our attitude, to show them that we are a team with a fighting spirit. Every coach is different and there are several ways to get your ideas across. Every team can play an attractive brand of football. Club matters aren’t something that the players need to think about. They have to simply focus on playing matters. Honda is back in his usual position. I feel he can play either out wide or behind the strikers. This experience is teaching me how to deal with those on the outside, who try to bring you down. I have been through some difficult moments in my life, but these moments are making me stronger. In our world, no one will tell you that you are doing the right thing. I believe in my methods and in my ways. I want to end by congratulating Antonelli and his wife on the birth of their baby girl."
