POST-MATCH REACTION

MILAN- This is what was said by the players and coaching staff after Empoli-Milan on Tuesday evening at the Castellani Stadium:
COACH FILIPPO INZAGHI (to the Milan Channel)"I cannot explain what happened at the start of the match. The team gave everything, created a lot and we have to look at the glass half full, we have the spirit, the desire and the best attack. I will try and make everyone improve and we have to work on set pieces. We faced an uphill start straightaway but then the team was fantastic. Bit by bit, we will play with a 4-2-3-1 formation. We have the players to do this like Bonaventura, El Shaarawy, Honda and Menez. Torres had a good match. He hadn’t played 90 minutes for a long time and I took him off because he was exhausted. I regret the first 30 minutes today, but my players are human and I am not able to get angry with them because they always give everything. We paid for the first half an hour. It’s been years since we’ve started the season with this many points. We will work to become great. Let’s not get distracted by Juve and Roma, but let’s think about Fiorentina, Napoli and Inter that are at our level. Even at Cesena it will be difficult. We’ll maybe have Essien back. I hope Alex is ready. Let’s move forward."
FERNANDO TORRES "I am happy for the goal, but I would gladly exchange it for 3 points. The important thing for a forward is that the side creates chances to score goals. The rest doesn’t count much. We come away from Empoli disappointed, but we had a good reaction. I am trying to adapt to the needs of the team. The opposition were very close and I tried to get the ball in between the lines to help the team. I am better physically, not yet 100%, but I am available to play. With great players like those that Milan has it’s easy to understand each other. I am now understanding how the team plays, what the opponents are like and Serie A, which is a different league compared to the Liga or the Premier League. I am happy and I am gaining in confidence. However one can always do better than this."
IGNAZIO ABATE "I am sorry about the result, because we had told ourselves that they start strongly and then drop-off. We were passive at the start, it’s useless denying it. It was a tricky match, that needed to be interpreted with grit. Let’s look at the glass half-full: we reacted and had chances to win. It will serve us as a lesson for the future. Regarding the errors from set pieces we have to be more attentive."
CRISTIAN ZAPATA"Empoli scored against us from two set pieces, we have to be more careful, we cannot commit these errors. We’ll become an important team if we avoid them. We have to be more attentive because these errors cost us dearly. Fernando is a great player, he helped the side a lot and he scored a brilliant goal."
COACH INZAGHI (PRESS CONFERENCE)"Empoli were very good and we knew they were strong from set-pieces. We had taken measures against this, but evidently it wasn’t enough. After conceding the two goals though we created a lot and maybe we could have won. Let’s keep the good things that we’re doing but we have to improve on the carelessness in defence. We will have to resolve all of this quickly. We’re still trying to settle as a side and at times you pay in these situations. We conceded from two set-pieces but we did well in possession. We had the desire to win today. If certain moments had gone in a different manner, like the cross-bar hit by Menez, we would be here celebrating a victory. I’m not attached to one formation. To get the best out of Menez’s qualities the 4-3-3 was perfect. The 4-2-3-1 could allow us to play Menez and Torres centrally. I hoped to have more time to try it out, but now we have 3 or 4 days at Milanello and it’s not ruled out that from the next match we won’t line-up like this. Van Ginkel has a sprained ankle. I hope he recovers quickly. Torres had a great match, with a goal, an assist for Menez and we’re very happy for him. He can give us lots of joy this season. Up until now we’ve always started with the right attitude from the first minute. We knew they would start very strongly and that we would have to be attentive. I also knew that with our qualities we would be able to score. We have to be good at improving. From today, let’s take the reaction and the desire. I’m not able to get angry because the players give everything. We have to improve that is for sure. The balance is important. The fault lies with everyone when we concede."
