POST-MATCH REACTION

MILAN- This is what was said by the players and the coaching staff after Saturday night’s goalless draw in the Italian capital:
DANIELE BONERA"It was a positive performance, at the start of the second half we imposed ourselves well, we didn’t run big risks and we even believed we could win. It was a test for ourselves, we wanted to collect a positive result after the excellent display against Napoli. It leaves me calm the fact that the team understands that to get results, we have to give these kind of performances. Then, highs and lows can happen, but we’re on the right path. On a personal level for next year I hope to stay well while for the team to continue like this. Happy Christmas, best wishes to all the Milan Channel subscribers and to all rossoneri!"
CRISTIAN ZAPATA"It was a brilliant match, we were expecting Roma to attack. We were focused and we had a big desire to get a result, the coach instilled in us that we had to play a great match. I am very happy to have been back in the starting line-up and happy for the performance. I will now rest with my family and then come back ready for January. I hope that it all goes well and that Milan are able to get back into Europe because we deserve it."
NIGEL DE JONG"We played a great match, even in 10 men. Everybody did well, not just the starting eleven, but also those that came off the bench. We’ll now get our energy back over the Christmas holidays and we will start again. I am happy because we had a great match before the holidays, but perhaps the break comes at the wrong time as we were doing well. Best wishes to all the Milan fans!"
COACH INZAGHI (PRESS CONFERENCE)"There is very little to say, the first thought this evening at the end of the match was about what was said about this Milan side in July. These past 2 matches fill me with pride, after 3 months, to be this ready out on the pitch, against Napoli and Roma, I think is a source of great satisfaction. The President is right when he says that we have to grow and believe even more in our objectives. The path that we have undertaken is the right one. After a match like that, there is very little to talk about in terms of individuals. The defence, that has often been the subject of criticism, did a great job, in the past 4 matches we’ve conceded just 1 goal. Zapata, who has often been spoken about badly, had a tremendous match against Gervinho. We cannot get ahead of ourselves, there’s the disappointment about being left in 10 men when we were having our best moment. It seemed to me that Roma had little strength, while we were strong on the break and with Poli and Bonaventura we came close to scoring. After the sending-off we were forced to drop back, I had to take off Honda and then of course we risked a bit in 10 v 11. Roma are doing great things, but Juve are also going well. It will be a very balanced championship, we will also have to battle with lots of teams for third place. Menez has scored 8 goals and he’s doing brilliant things in that role, even tonight he gave a top performance. I tried to instill into the players’ minds the conviction that they can compete. To hear the captain say “we’ve become a team” I think is the biggest satisfaction that I’ve had since I’ve been coaching. When I started coaching Milan, I said that my objective was to take Milan back to winning Italian titles soon. I have to get the best out of this team. Menez has to take the credit, I only spoke to him in Ibiza when there was the opportunity to sign him. I called Ancelotti and Ibra and they advised me to get him because they told me he was a great talent. When we spoke he told me he had matured and he had understood the errors he made. He demonstrated to me that he had a big desire for revenge to try and get back in the national side. He’s becoming a leader not just technically but also in terms of behaviour. We will really miss Honda because he’s had 3 incredible months from all points of view. We will have to cope like we’ve done for the absences of Abate, De Sciglio, Alex and Rami, this has to be our strength."
