MILAN – 15 years on since San Siro last hosted the final of the Champions League between Bayern Munich and Valencia, the home of AC Milan and Inter is gearing up once again to take centre stage for the 2016 final scheduled for May 28. While no Italian teams are left in Europe’s elite competition, it still remains a big chance for the city of Milan and the whole of Italy to take the limelight. On Friday, the UEFA Champions League trophy was officially handed over to the city of Milan in a special ceremony which took place at the Palazzo Marino in the city. In addition to the Mayor of Milan Giuliano Pisapia, Rossoneri legend Franco Baresi was present and representing the club while former Milan midfielder Demetrio Albertini was also on hand as an ambassador for the city. Speaking at the event, Baresi had the following to say: "Reaching the final and winning the Champions League is a dream. I played in the competition when it was still known as the European Cup. There has always been a special atmosphere surrounding the competition. It’s an incredible feeling for a player. It’s brilliant to have the final back in Milan and it’s a real source of pride for the city of Milan. The first time I won it was the best for me, in the final played in Barcelona. It had been 20 years since Milan had last won the trophy. It was really emotional. I love attacking football and so I am hoping for a final between Real Madrid-Bayern."
