MILAN – Diego Lopez, Giacomo Bonaventura and Riccardo Montolivo have all had their say on a possible third place finish this season in several Italian dailies. Diego Lopez spoke to the Italian sports daily Tuttosport. This is what the Spanish goalkeeper had to say about the battle for third place: “I believe. It will be hard, there are many sides that are aiming for the Champions League. Napoli are perhaps the most valid candidate, but Inter and Fiorentina are coming back, the Genoa sides and Lazio are playing very well."Milan’s first choice goalkeeper also spoke about his decision to join Milan and how he has settled in since joining from Spanish giants Real Madrid: "It wasn’t easy to manage so many of us in Madrid. I spoke to coach Ancelotti and with the goalkeeping coach Villiam Vecchi. They helped me make the decision speaking very well about Milan and its history. For me it was an important opportunity to take up. I’m very happy in Milan, it’s an important life experience. I’ve been met by a very organised club and an ideal environment at Milanello. I have an excellent relationship with Abbiati and Agazzi, 2 extraordinary guys that have helped me settle in."Another recent addition to the squad, Giacomo Bonaventura, has likewise spoken to the press and expressed his opinions on a third place finish for the rossoneri. In an interview with the Italian sports daily, the Corriere dello Sport, this is what the Italian said: “We will try, but the other sides are also equipped like us. Milan has all the cards in place to reach this objective. This squad has to grow, Saturday will show at what point we’re at. We have to create a mentality to also win against the big teams."Bonaventura in his interview also spoke about his relationship with head coach Inzaghi: "The important thing for me is to know what I have to do. Inzaghi is perfect in this sense: he puts me at ease, he teaches me how to free myself from my marker. The position isn’t important, but how you interpret match situations. As a wide midfielder or as a winger the movements are very similar. Since I arrived he has shown great faith in me. I can improve, I need to have more intensity and be more present in the penalty area, close to the goal."On the President Silvio Berlusconi: "He has great charisma and a lot of influence on us. He wants to move forwards. Often he gives us the odd tactical advice.” Finally, club skipper Riccardo Montolivo, speaking to the Italian daily the Corriere della Sera: “The victory against Napoli was important: we had to give a response, to those on the outside and internally. The match against Roma is not impossible, granted they’re a top level team, but the real challenge is with ourselves.”On his comeback: "Those 5 minutes against Udinese were like a second Serie A debut for me. When 6 months ago I found myself in hospital in London, with a broken tibia, I was waiting for that moment. One knows they are the risks of the job, that they can happen, but the timing, 5 days before the World Cup, was really dramatic. My family were fundamental and my second family, Milan. The President Berlusconi was personally close to me. I’ve been sorry not to have been able to give a hand. I’ve always tried to bring my passing to the build-up play. Perhaps we’ve been missing something from this point of view.”Other themes: “We’re doing an excellent job. Now this Milan needs to look at itself in the mirror and ask itself what it wants to become. I believe that this squad cannot do without a battling spirit based on intensity, sacrifice and determination. It’s a different Milan compared to other times, it’s pointless denying it. It has quality, but it won't come through if the team doesn’t take to the pitch with this spirit. Inzaghi? The quality which everyone recognises is his ability to pass on great enthusiasm, he’s a motivator. Another quality which people speak less about is that he learns quickly. In a matter of months he’s grown a lot. He’s like a sponge, he soaks up advice from everyone. He has his playing style. I agree with the President when he says that this team can compete for the top positions, providing that we maintain the spirit I spoke about, otherwise it’s hard. After a negative year like the one last year, everyone, me first of all, asked ourselves what more could be done. More harmony at the club? Yes. Last year I also said that this situation didn’t help. Now you can sense a different atmosphere.”
