“A DESERVED VICTORY”

MILAN – This is what was said by the players and the coach after Milan’s 3-2 victory over Palermo on Saturday night in Serie A:
SINISA MIHAJLOVIC (to the Milan Channel)"We did well tonight. We dictated the play, even if we then made it hard for ourselves for 10-15 minutes. We need to improve on this and it’s important that we don’t stop playing. Instead, we need to be more ruthless and put matches to bed. We cannot leave the result hanging in the balance. However, for our overall performance I think we deserved this win. We repeated our performance from the derby and we won. With this spirit and by staying on this path we can achieve a lot of good things. It wasn’t easy today against an organised Palermo side with some good players. We created chances in both the first and second half. In the second half perhaps we weren’t as compact and maybe we should have believed more. We have to learn that there are moments when you have to sit on your lead, but not when the opposing side is in difficulty. In those situations you need to put the result beyond all doubt.Calabria? He had an excellent game. It was not easy for him. He is intelligent, has good feet and is a quality player. He is an important player for Milan’s future. With him, Ely and Romagnoli Milan have a bright future. The team gave everything today, but we have to be more attentive in defence. On Tuesday against Udinese we will try and repeat this performance and remember that we have to improve. When I was given the chance to sign Kucka, I said yes right away. He is a physical player, but also technical. He took a knock early on but he gritted his teeth and carried on. I like his desire and his work ethic. Him and Balotelli were two excellent transfer moves. The credit goes to Adriano Galliani."
RICCARDO MONTOLIVO"It was very important to win tonight. The team approached the match well and played with a good amount of aggression. It’s just a shame that we nearly compromised the win with a few errors, and we conceded a couple of careless goals, but we will improve on this. I was able to win back possession on lots of occasions and I try to combine my role in the team with a certain amount of aggression in the defensive phase. Today the match went well and I am happy, even if we need to keep making improvements. The captain’s armband is a big responsibility and it is easier for me to give out tactical instructions because I am in the heart of the action. The president enjoyed it, he suffered a bit too much at times like the rest of the fans, but we did everything that was possible. The next match with Udinese will be hard, but we need to be consistent with our results and it’s vital to win again."
CARLOS BACCA "I thank God, we are happy with this win and I am happy with my goals. However, I am pleased for the team above all. Weah and Inzaghi made history with this club and I want to leave my mark here too by giving my all for this team. I am happy to be at such a big club. I chose to sign for Milan because of the club’s history and what it has achieved in football. I am training hard to ensure that I am up to the standards of this prestigious jersey. I want to thank the fans who always give their full support. I want to pay them back for their affection by giving my all and working hard. As a forward, it is my duty to make movements and work for the good of the team. I ensure that I do what the coach asks of me as well as scoring goals for the team. There are other big players here like Luiz Adriano and Balotelli. Everyone does their best every day to try and be selected by the coach on match-day. All of the goals I have scored are important to me, but if I had to choose my favourite I would say the one I scored with my head. We’re a new side that has been put together, but we’re improving and it’s easier to do that after a victory. We’re clear in our objectives and we just have to work hard."
DAVIDE CALABRIA"Ignazio Abate unfortunately picked up an injury early on and it gave me my chance to come off the bench. I tried to focus and give my very best. I am happy with how I played and I hope I can keep it going. When I played that cross (which would lead to Bacca’s opener, editor’s note), I thought this is the most important cross of my life! I was hoping it would go well, I played it in the box and we then scored so I think it went pretty well. The coach spoke to us after the match and he told us that we have to do better when we’re in the lead and control the match better. We will improve on this. I try and stay calm every time I am called upon. I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself. The team hasn’t performed to its standards in recent seasons, but we will try and keep winning and aim for the top end of the table."
SINISA MIHAJLOVIC (press conference)"I get the feeling that when we’re in the lead, we’re happy to settle or we’re afraid to win. We need to believe more and when our opponents are struggling we need to kill off the match. We need to be more clinical in the final third of the pitch and more aggressive in defence. Montolivo has played well in these past two matches. I don’t think I will change anything in that area of the team. De Jong and Montolivo are two important players. We now have 2 matches in the space of a week and everyone has to make sure they’re ready. We have character and showed that tonight. After the match with Empoli, I spoke about the mental aspect and I think it is paying off. Now, we cannot afford to take any steps back and we need to stay on this track. We’re still missing 4 key players: Antonelli, Bertolacci, Menez and Niang. They are players that provide us with alternative playing styles. The points we have collected so far are what we have deserved. At times, defeats can be more useful than a win. The loss in the derby showed the team that by playing together we can pick up some important results."
