🇮🇹   The Serie A Enilive match between Empoli and Monza on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at the Carlo Castellani Stadium ended in a stalemate. Although Empoli showcased a stronger performance than Monza, they couldn’t secure the win. This match marks Monza’s third Serie A season, starting with a 0-0 draw at Empoli, a venue where they had previously struggled, losing both of the last two seasons and failing to earn points on the opening day.

Monza had the first opportunity of the game in the 8th minute when former player Daniel Maldini made a run and fired a powerful shot that went wide. Empoli responded in the 12th minute with another ex-player, Colombo, who delivered a cross that Izzo expertly intercepted just before Esposito could take a shot. In the 24th minute, Pizzignacco made a fantastic save, leaping to deflect Pezzella’s left-footed cross, preventing Gyasi from scoring.

In the 74th minute, Caldirola for Monza missed a close-range shot that went over the bar. Colombo nearly put Empoli ahead in the 76th minute with a brilliant display of skill, but ten minutes later, Solbakken’s attempt was thwarted by the Monza goalkeeper, who continued to deny Empoli a goal.

By the way, Monza’s coach, Alessandro Nesta, was not on the sidelines for this match due to a suspension, so Lorenzo Rubinacci took charge from the bench during the game against Empoli. In addition, Empoli Coach Roberto D’Aversa was also suspended for this game.

Looking ahead, Monza will host Genoa in their next match, while Empoli will travel to face Roma at the Olimpico Stadium.

Stats before the game:

Empoli and Monza have been perfectly balanced in the four previous meetings in Serie A: two wins each, always obtained by the host team. In addition, Monza are still looking for their first away goal against the Tuscans in the top division.
Between Serie A and Serie B, Empoli have remained unbeaten in eight of their nine home games against Monza (5W, 3D), the only away win for the Brianza team dates back to 6 October 1985 in the cadet championship (1-0).
Empoli have never drawn their first match of the season in their 16 Serie A championships (4W, 12L) – losing in seven of the last eight, their only win in the period dates back to 19 August 2018 (2-0 against Cagliari).
Monza have lost both of their two opening-day Serie A games of the season: 1-2 against Torino in 2022/23 and 0-2 against Inter in 2023/24.
Last season, Empoli achieved safety for the third consecutive season, the first time in their Serie A history.
After beating Roma 2-1 in their final match of last season, Empoli could win two games in a row in Serie A for the first time since May 2023 (against Bologna and Salernitana in that case).
Monza ended last season with a nine-match winless streak (D3 L6), already a record for the club in Serie A – losing all of their last three games, only in their first five games in the top flight have they recorded more consecutive defeats.
