ANOTHER SPECIAL EUROPEAN NIGHT

(IN THE PHOTO: President Berlusconi with coach Clarence Seedorf)MILAN – From Slovan Liberec to the San Siro, from the 15th of August 2002 to today. 11 and a half years ago, during Milan-Slovan Liberec, something special was created. Milan had already won 5 European Cups, but that night a new Milan, in a new edition and format of the Champions League, came together. From that night a new chapter was written in Milan’s illustrious history: 2 Champions League titles have been added to the trophy cabinet along with 1 final, 2 semi-finals, 2 quarter-finals as well as reaching the last-16 on 5 occasions including Wednesday night’s tie with Atletico Madrid.Since that match Milan-Slovan Liberec, Milan have played 119 matches in the Champions League and tonight is the 120th. That night back in August 2002 in a Champions League qualifier, Milan won thanks to an assist from Clarence Seedorf and a goal from Pippo Inzaghi. This week meanwhile the assist has come from Inzaghi with the triumph in the Viareggio Tournament and now it’s Seedorf’s turn to build on that against a strong Atletico Madrid side. The factors may change, but the result never changes: Milan and its illustrious history, who were blessed yesterday by a welcome visit to Milanello by club President Silvio Berlusconi.
