🏆👉    The big day is here.  Italy 🇮🇹 won the UEFA Nations League, League A, Group 2 game on Friday 6 September 2024 at the Parc des Princes Stadium in Paris, France.  Italy defeated France 🇫🇷  . This marks the 40th encounter between Italy and France.  Italy picks the perfect moment to claim victory in France, marking seventy years since their last triumph and doing so on a night filled with challenges. They pull off an impressive comeback with three goals against the overconfident Bleus, who initially take the lead but soon face a harsh reality check.  Forza Italia!

Despite nearly flawless play for 90 minutes, the match doesn’t quite erase the bitter memories of the European Championship in Germany. However, the team starts strong, showcasing the spirit and determination fans had hoped to see at the Olympiastadion, even if it comes two months later during their Nations League debut. Everything falls into place: the fighting spirit, the willingness to endure, and the resilience to bounce back. The only hiccup is the start, as the evening at the Parc des Princes kicks off in the worst way possible, with a goal conceded just 12 seconds in, before Donnarumma has even donned his gloves. It feels like a disaster is looming, but instead, it ignites a spark in the Azzurri.

Italy reacts…

There is life on planet Italy. A logical national team. Reactive, attentive, concentrated. Head and legs, with the three-man defense almost insurmountable and at the European Championship used only against Croatia.

Calafiori and Bastoni are two giants, the return of Tonali is pure oxygen, the direction of the debutant Ricci is encouraging. Dimarco, Frattesi and Raspadori, who came on from the bench, sign a historic victory, which allows us to start well in the Nations group and chase away the ghosts of a terrible summer. Now we must not delude ourselves that Italy has suddenly recovered. But perhaps the worst is behind us. Also to be applauded is the concreteness of Spalletti, who does not make any mistakes, plays with the ball in the first half and on the counterattack in the second half. The substitutions are also spot on.

The statistics lean towards the Azzurri, who have secured 18 victories compared to France’s 11, along with 10 matches ending in a draw. The Italian national team has only recorded more wins against Switzerland, with a total of 29.

Stats before the game

The first ever match in the history of the Italian national team was played against France, on May 15, 1910 in a friendly at the Arena Civica in Milan (victory of the Azzurri by 6-2 with Umberto Meazza as coach).
Italy has won only one of the last 13 matches against France (4D, 8P): 2-0 on June 17, 2008 in the third match of the group stage of EURO 2008, after having remained unbeaten in the previous 19 against les Bleus (14W, 5D).
France have won the last three matches against Italy, all in friendlies, the last of which on June 1, 2018 in Nice (3-1). Les Bleus have never won four games in a row against the Azzurri.

Under Spalletti (since August 2023), Davide Frattesi is both Italy’s top scorer (four goals, at least double that of any other player) and the Azzurri player with the most appearances (13).

UEFA Nations League Tickets

France and Italy have been perfectly balanced, excluding friendlies: four wins each and four draws, with the Azzurri scoring 17 goals and the Bleus scoring 18.
Italy have lost two of their last three games (D1), as many as in their previous 14 (W9 D3) – the last time the Azzurri had a longer streak without a win was between September and July 2021 (four consecutive draws in that case).
France lost their last match (against Spain in the semi-final of EURO 2024), Les Bleus have not lost two games in a row since June 2015 (against Belgium and Albania, both in friendlies in that case).

Only Giorgi Mamardashvili (4.7) and Jan Oblak (3.8) have avoided conceding more goals than Gianluigi Donnarumma (3.3) at EURO 2024 based on the quality and danger of the shots faced, calculated with the Expected Goals conceded model (excluding own goals). Donnarumma has in fact conceded four goals (excluding own goals) against an xG on target conceded value of 7.3; in 5th place in this ranking we find Mike Maignan (2.4).

THE NATIONS LEAGUE.

The Azzurri, finalists in the last two Nations Leagues, are in Group 2 of League A alongside France, Belgium, and Israel. They will face these formidable opponents in six matches scheduled between September and November. The top two teams advance to the quarter-finals, a new stage introduced this year before reaching the Finals. The third-placed team will face a play-out against a team from League B (quarter-finals and play-outs between March 20 and 25, 2025), and the bottom team will be relegated to League B. The Finals will take place from 7 to 8 June 2025.

The Nations League also significantly impacts the European Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, which will be the first edition featuring 48 teams in the final stage. The 55 European nations (or 54 if Russia’s suspension is confirmed) will be divided into 12 groups of 4 or 5 teams, with home-and-away matches from March to November 2025. Teams reaching the Nations League quarter-finals or play-offs will start their World Cup qualifiers in June, with the exception of the four Nations League finalists. The 12 group winners will secure their spots in the 2026 World Cup in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. The 12 runners-up will compete in a play-off phase, alongside the four highest-ranked Nations League teams that have not already qualified. These 16 teams will be drawn into four mini-tournaments, with semi-finals and finals (home-and-away matches) scheduled for March 2026.
