🏆👉  Italy and Belgium played to a draw in their UEFA Nations League match, League A – Group A2, on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at the Olimpico di Roma Stadium. No need to worry! Italy remains in the lead with 7 points following the draw, while France is right behind with 6 points. Belgium has 4 points, and Israel is still looking for their first points.

It’s important to note that Italy had to play with 10 men from the 40th minute after Lorenzo Pellegrini received a red card. Italy’s goals came from Andrea Cambiaso and Mateo Retegui, while Belgium found the net through Maxim De Cuyper and Leandro Trossard.

This match marked the 25th meeting between Italy and Belgium. With this draw, the Azzurri maintained an impressive record, remaining unbeaten in 21 of their last 25 encounters, which includes 16 victories and 5 draws. The last time Belgium won was on November 13, 2015, when they secured a 3-1 victory in a friendly.

Serie A players with Belgium National team
  • Genoa defender Koni De Winter – he was listed among the substitutes.
  • Atalanta midfielder Charles De Ketelaere – played until the 68th minute. He was replaced by Dodi Lukebakio.
  • Napoli forward Cyril Ngonge (Napoli) – played from the 87th minute after replacing Loïs Openda.

What a rapid goal that was! In the 2nd minute, Andrea Cambiaso scored for Italy with a close-range shot defeating Belgium goalkeeper Koen Casteels using his right foot, sending it right to the center. Pellegrini assisted Dimarco on the left side, and the full-back made a low cross into the center, where De Cuyper almost turned it into an own goal while sliding.

A great match! Italy scored a second goal in the 24th minute. Mateo Retegui scored with a left footed shot to the center. Bim, bam, boom! Dimarco makes a fantastic switch of play to Cambiaso, who charges into the penalty area. He then cuts back with his left foot and fires a shot towards the far post, but Casteels manages to deflect it to the side. Retegui is right there, ready to simply tap it in with his left foot into the open net.

What terrible luck!

Can you believe it? Referee Espen Eskas showed a red card to Lorenzo Pellegrini after a VAR review of a foul on a Belgian defender, even though he was initially just given a warning. The whole situation took a turn… The referee was summoned by VAR, and after checking the monitor, he reversed his decision and issued a red card. Now Italy is down to 10 players!

Ooops! Belgium shortened the distance in the 42nd minute for the 2-1. Maxim De Cuyper defeated Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma with a left footed shot to the bottom left corner. The assist is by Leandro Trossard.

Gianluigi Donnarumma (

Oh dear, it’s a tie now! Belgium equalized in the 62nd minute! Leandro Trossard scored with a right-footed shot aimed at the bottom left corner after Giovanni Di Lorenzo allowed a corner.

We’ll have to wait for the next game to find out if Daniel Maldini will make his debut. He was included on the substitutes’ bench.  Daniel is following in the footsteps of Cesare and Paolo, he would create a unique milestone in Italy’s football history, being the first to connect three generations—grandfather, father, and son. Should Daniel step onto the pitch for the Azzurri in this match, it will have been 22 years and 114 days since Paolo Maldini last represented Italy (in a match against South Korea on June 18, 2002) and an impressive 60 years and 363 days since Cesare Maldini’s last game for the national team (against the USSR on October 13, 1963).

Stats before the game

Italy have won five of the last six meetings against Belgium (L1), including all three most recent ones – scoring twice as many goals as the Red Devils in the period (12 vs 6).
The Italian team has remained unbeaten in 12 of the 13 matches against Belgium played on Italian soil (W8 D4), the only defeat dates back to 13 November 1999 (1-3 in a friendly in Lecce).
Italy have won their last two matches (against France and Israel in the Nations League) and could achieve three wins in a row for the first time under Luciano Spalletti, the last time being between September and November 2022.

Italy have conceded in each of their last six matches, the last time they recorded a longer streak of consecutive games with goals conceded was between March and October 2018 (eight in that case).

Belgium lost their last match (0-2 against France in the Nations League) and have not recorded two defeats in a row since the period between September and November 2022 (against the Netherlands and Egypt in that case). Furthermore, the Red Devils have failed to score in four of their last six matches.

Italy are unbeaten in their last seven matches played in Rome (6W, 1D), the last defeat of the Azzurri in the capital dates back to 14 August 2013 (1-2 against Argentina in a friendly).
22 of Italy’s 26 goals under Luciano Spalletti have come from open play (85%), including all of the last seven.

Under Luciano Spalletti (since September 2023), Davide Frattesi has scored six goals: at least three times more than any other teammate in the Italian national team. Furthermore, since September 2023, only Bruno Fernandes (nine) has scored more goals than Frattesi (six) among European midfielders with their respective national teams.

🇮🇹👉 Italy Head coach Luciano Spalletti has selected a squad of 23 players for the UEFA Nations League.  Four players will be making their debut for the national team: Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio, Milan defender Matteo Gabbia, Roma midfielder Niccolò Pisilli, and Monza forward Daniel Maldini. Notably, this marks a special moment as, over 22 years since his father Paolo Maldini last played (June 18, 2002). Moreover, 61 years since his grandfather Cesare, a Maldini will once again don the Azzurri jersey.  The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has announced that the national team will assemble on Sunday, October 6, at Coverciano.

🏆 🇮🇹👉 Italy road in the UEFA Nations League

First, on Thursday, October 10th at 20:45 CEST (broadcast live on Rai 1), they will take on Belgium at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.  Second, on Monday, October 14th at 20:45 CEST (also live on Rai 1), they will face Israel again at the Stadio Friuli in Udine. ✅   Greetings, my friends!  I present to you the latest front pages from the Italian newspapers La Gazzetta dello Sport, Corriere dello Sport, and Tutto Sport, dated Friday 6 September 2024.

Excitement is building around the Italian team’s game against France in the UEFA Nations League. Let’s leave the Euro disappointment in the past. I was taken aback by a headline about Juventus Coach Thiago Motta choosing to keep Danilo, Brazil’s captain as a substitute, given his previous importance under Allegri. On a positive note, Alvaro Morata is in fantastic form for the upcoming Milan Derby.
