What a rapid goal that was! In the 2nd minute, Andrea Cambiaso scored for Italy with a close-range shot defeating Belgium goalkeeper Koen Casteels using his right foot, sending it right to the center. Pellegrini assisted Dimarco on the left side, and the full-back made a low cross into the center, where De Cuyper almost turned it into an own goal while sliding.

1 – Italy have scored in the 1st minute of play for the first time since 11th June 2013, in a friendly match against Haiti (goal netted by Emanuele Giaccherini in that case). Sprint.#ItaliaBelgio

A great match! Italy scored a second goal in the 24th minute. Mateo Retegui scored with a left footed shot to the center. Bim, bam, boom! Dimarco makes a fantastic switch of play to Cambiaso, who charges into the penalty area. He then cuts back with his left foot and fires a shot towards the far post, but Casteels manages to deflect it to the side. Retegui is right there, ready to simply tap it in with his left foot into the open net.

What terrible luck!
Can you believe it? Referee Espen Eskas showed a red card to Lorenzo Pellegrini after a VAR review of a foul on a Belgian defender, even though he was initially just given a warning. The whole situation took a turn… The referee was summoned by VAR, and after checking the monitor, he reversed his decision and issued a red card. Now Italy is down to 10 players!

We’ll have to wait for the next game to find out if Daniel Maldini will make his debut. He was included on the substitutes’ bench. Daniel is following in the footsteps of Cesare and Paolo, he would create a unique milestone in Italy’s football history, being the first to connect three generations—grandfather, father, and son. Should Daniel step onto the pitch for the Azzurri in this match, it will have been 22 years and 114 days since Paolo Maldini last represented Italy (in a match against South Korea on June 18, 2002) and an impressive 60 years and 363 days since Cesare Maldini’s last game for the national team (against the USSR on October 13, 1963).

The Italian team has remained unbeaten in 12 of the 13 matches against Belgium played on Italian soil (W8 D4), the only defeat dates back to 13 November 1999 (1-3 in a friendly in Lecce).
Italy have won their last two matches (against France and Israel in the Nations League) and could achieve three wins in a row for the first time under Luciano Spalletti, the last time being between September and November 2022.
Italy have conceded in each of their last six matches, the last time they recorded a longer streak of consecutive games with goals conceded was between March and October 2018 (eight in that case).
Belgium lost their last match (0-2 against France in the Nations League) and have not recorded two defeats in a row since the period between September and November 2022 (against the Netherlands and Egypt in that case). Furthermore, the Red Devils have failed to score in four of their last six matches.
