UEFA Euro 2020: Result DENMARK 1 – 2 BELGIUM, Thursday 17 June 2021

Belgium win the UEFA Euro Group B Matchday 2 defeating Denmark on Thursday 17 June 2021.  Belgium is the second team to qualify to the Round of 16.   It was an emotional game as the game stopped in the 10th minute paying a one minute applause as tribute to Denmark and Inter player Christian Eriksen, 29, who suffered a cardiac arrest on Matchday 1 in the 42nd minute of Denmark against Finland at the Parken Stadium.  Eriksen remains at the Hospital Rigshospitalet, which is just 500 meters from the stadium in Copenhagen.

Denmark manager Kasper Hjulmand said Eriksen watched the match from  the hospital. The 10th minute means Eriksen’s shirt number.   Memorable too is that Belgium and Napoli forward Dries Mertens leading the players and crowd to applause Eriksen.  A banner at the Stadium sending the message to Eriksen saying:  “All of Denmark is with you Christian”.

  • Napoli forward Dries Mertens (Belgium) played 45 minutes replacing Kevin De Bruyne.

Denmark opening the score in the 2nd minute.  Yussuf Poulsen defeated Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois with a right footed shot to the bottom left corner.  The assist is by Pierre-Emile Højbjerg.

Belgium equalizing for the 1-1 in the 54th minute. Thorgan Hazard defeated Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel with a left footed shot to the center.  The assist is by Kevin De Bruyne.

Russia making history winning the UEFA Euro 2020 Group B Matchday 2 defeating Finland on Wednesday 16 June 2021 in Saint Petersburg.   The hero for Russia is Serie A player Atalanta forward Aleksey Miranchuk scoring the only goal of the game and enough to claim the victory.   Russia celebrate their first win at a EURO competition since 2012 opener. Highlight of the match is Finland warming up  wearing t-shirts with the message “Get well Christian” written across them.  Denmark and Inter player Christian Eriksen is recovering after his heart attack on Matchday 1 during the game against Finland. On Matchday 3, June 21, Finland will face Belgium at St Petersburg and Russia will face Denmark in Copenhagen.

The victory giving an added boost to Wales towards qualifying for the European Championship knockout stages.
