Lazio returned to the Champions League after three years and as second in the last Serie A standings, ending with a draw against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday 19 September 2023 at the Olimpico di Roma Stadium in Rome, Italy. Sure, this is an incredible conclusion of the first day of the Champions League. Goalkeeper Ivan Provedel at the last second, to be precise, at the 95th minute, from a corner, finds a goal from a pure center forward and allows the Biancocelesti to snatch a point. Atletico, cynical in the first half, had managed the second half by coming close to doubling the lead (post by Morata, miracle by Provedel on Lino) allowing little space.
In two weeks, Sarri’s team will played the away game at Celtic while Simeone’s boys will host Feyenoord.
Atletico always present in the last 10 editions of the Champions – who finished third in the 2022/23 La Liga; both teams have not started this season in the best way: Sarri’s team has won just three points (fifteenth) in the league, Simeone’s, seven (seventh).
Atletico Madrid opened the score in the 29th minute. Pablo Barrios defeated Lazio goalkeeper with a right-footed shot to the bottom right corner. The assist is by Nahuel Molina.
Lazio equalized in extremis, yes, in the 95th minute! It is goalkeeper Ivan Provedel to level the score from very close range with a headed shot following a corner conceded by Nahuel Molina.
Stats before the game: This will be the first ever meeting between Lazio and Atlético Madrid in the Champions League. The last time they met was in the round of 32 of the 2011/12 Europa League, with the Spanish team winning 3-1 in Rome and 1-0 at home. Atlético Madrid have lost three of their last five Champions League matches against Italian teams (W1, D1), after remaining unbeaten in their first seven matches against these opponents (W5, D2). On the other hand, Lazio have won only one of their six matches against Spanish opponents in the tournament (2N, 3L). After being eliminated in the group stage in three consecutive editions of the Champions League (2001-02, 2003-04 and 2007-08), Lazio remained unbeaten at this stage of the tournament in their last participation in 2020-21, qualifying for the round of 16 (2W, 4D). Lazio have always conceded goals in their last 19 Champions League matches, following the 2-0 win at Besiktas in September 2003. This is the longest streak without a clean sheet among Italian teams in the competition, equal to that of Rome (19 between 2010 and 2015). Atlético Madrid did not get past the group stage in last season’s Champions League and have never been eliminated from the group stage in two consecutive editions of the tournament.

🏆👉AC Milan ended the UEFA Champions League Group Stage game against Newcastle United with a goalless draw on Tuesday 19 September 2023 at San Siro Stadium in Milan, Italy. There were numerous scoring opportunities for the Rossoneri, especially in the first half. Opportunities for Chukwueze, Olivier Giroud, Theo Hernandez, Rafael Leao, Pobega and Reijnders. Newcastle United dangerous only in full recovery with Longstaff. Bad news for AC Milan are the muscle injuries for Maignan and Loftus-Cheek.
In the next round of the Champions League for Milan, away match at Borussia Dortmund, Newcastle will play at home against PSG.
Stats before the game: This is the first official meeting between Milan and Newcastle: the Rossoneri have won only one of the last 11 matches against English teams (2D, 8L), but the success came against Tottenham in last season’s Champions League (1-0 at the Meazza ). Newcastle enjoyed success in their last European away game against Italian opposition, beating Palermo 1-0 in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup. Prior to that, the Magpies had failed to win any of their first four away games in Italy (D2, L2). This will be Milan’s 20th participation in the Champions League, only Juventus (23) has more among Italian teams. After seven seasons of absence between 2014-15 and 2020-21, this is the Rossoneri’s third consecutive edition in the competition. Semi-finalists last season, Milan have only been eliminated in the group stage in one of their last 14 Champions League appearances (in 2021-22). This will be Newcastle’s third season in the Champions League, after 1997-98 and 2002-03. Their last game in the tournament was 20 years and 184 days ago, the longest such gap for an English team in the competition.
Lineup AC MILAN (4-3-3): Maignan; Calabria, Thiaw, Tomori, Hernández; Loftus-Cheek, Krunić, Pobega; Chukwueze, Giroud, Leão.
