Bologna lost the UEFA Champions League on Matchday 2 against Liverpool on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at Anfield Stadium in Liverpool, England.  Liverpool secured a 2-0 victory over Bologna, scoring once in each half to claim all three points in the standings. Mac Allister, assisted by Mohamed Salah, opened the scoring just 11 minutes into the match. Ndoye came close to equalizing, hitting the crossbar in the 28th minute and the outside of the post shortly after in the 32nd minute. Salah sealed the win with a second goal in the 75th minute.

In their next Champions League match, Liverpool will face Leipzig away, while Bologna will travel to take on Aston Villa.

This marks the first encounter between Liverpool and Bologna, making the Felsinei the tenth Italian team Liverpool has faced in European competitions, following Inter, Juventus, Roma, Genoa, Milan, Fiorentina, Napoli, Udinese, and Atalanta.

Vincenzo Italiano has encountered an English team just once in European tournaments, which was during the 2023 Conference League final where Fiorentina lost 2-1 to West Ham.

Bologna has previously played against three English teams in European competitions, with their last match being against Fulham in the 2002 Intertoto Cup. The last time they participated in the main European competitions was in the 1966/67 season when they were eliminated by Leeds in the Fairs Cup after a coin toss, with the aggregate score being 1-1.

The beginning…

In the 11th minute, Liverpool surged ahead as Alexis Mac Allister scored with a close-range left-footed shot that slipped past Bologna’s goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski into the bottom left corner. The goal was set up by a fantastic cross from Mohamed Salah.

Bologna faced turmoil as Liverpool added another goal in the 75th minute. Mohamed Salah delivered a brilliant left-footed strike from the right side of the box, perfectly placing it in the top left corner, with a key assist from Dominik Szoboszlai.

Stats before the game

Bologna have faced three English teams in all European competitions, most recently against Fulham in the 2002 Intertoto Cup; while in the main European competitions their last match dates back to 1966/67, when the Rossoblu were eliminated by Leeds in the Fairs Cup after the toss of a coin (1-1 over the first and second leg).

In European competitions, no other nation has beaten Liverpool at Anfield more times than Italian teams (seven, level with the Spanish); specifically, the Reds have lost three of their last five home games against Italian teams (2W).

Liverpool have won their last 10 home group stage games in major European competitions, scoring at least two goals in the last nine; meanwhile, the Reds’ last defeat at Anfield in this stage came against an Italian side, 0-2 against Atalanta in November 2020.

Despite having had 17 shots, Bologna recorded a 0-0 draw in their first Champions League game against Shakhtar Donetsk. Only two teams have drawn their first two games in the competition goalless: Galatasaray in 1993 and Villarreal in 2005.

UEFA Champions League Tickets

Liverpool had 11 shots on target in their 3-1 win over Milan, their first Champions League game under Arne Slot. This is the most shots on target by a Premier League team in their first game under a new manager in the competition since Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in September 2016 (also 11).

The only shot on target Bologna conceded on Matchday 1 against Shakhtar Donetsk was a penalty saved by Lukasz Skorupski, who returned to the Champions League 9 years and 318 days after his debut in the competition (November 2014), the sixth longest gap between appearances by a goalkeeper in the competition.

Mohamed Salah could become the first Liverpool player to score in five consecutive home games in the European Cup/Champions League; the Egyptian found the net in all four of his Anfield appearances in his previous campaign in the competition (four goals in 2022/23).
