Kuipers has refereed AS Roma three times in the Champions League. The first match was Roma’s 3-2 win away at Basel on 3 November 2010 in the group stage of the 2010-11 competition, with goals by Jeremy Menez, Francesco Totti and Leandro Greco. Kuipers’ second game in charge of Roma was the 1-1 draw away at Manchester City on 30 September 2014, also in the group stages. Interesting fact, Francesco Totti’s goal meant he became the oldest player ever to score in the Champions League. The third match Roma 1-1 Barcelona on 16 September 2015.

Atletico de Madrid had the chance to equalize the score for the 1 -1 in the 46th minute. Referee giving a penalty to Atletico conceded by Real Madrid defender Pepe after a foul on Atletico Madrid forward Fernando Torres. Real Madrid goalkeeper gets a yellow card. Things complicated for Atletico because Antoine Griezmann failed to convert the penalty after his left footed shot hits the bar. Incredible. Something not easy to digest.
