Juventus, 5th position with 36 points and a positive goal difference of +17

The race for the Scudetto is heating up! Napoli triumphed in Serie A Week 22, defeating Juventus on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples, Italy. This victory is crucial for Napoli as they secure a significant win against a Juventus team that has just faced its first loss of the season. With this win, Napoli now sits at the top of the table with 53 points, while Juventus has slipped to 5th place with only 36 points, trailing Napoli by a hefty 17 points. Ouch!

To summarize, Juventus initially took the lead with Kolo Muani scoring in the first half. However, Napoli dominated the second half, equalizing through Frank Anguissa. The decisive moment came when Romelu Lukaku converted a penalty, sealing the match at 2-1. The atmosphere is electric in Naples, and you can bet the fans at the Maradona are in full celebration mode! Now, it’s time for Juventus Coach Thiago Motta to reflect on the game and strategize for a comeback in the standings.

On the one hand, Napoli are, together with Roma, one of two teams that have not yet drawn a home game in this Serie A; on the other, no team has drawn more away matches than Juventus (six, like Roma and Leganés) in the current top five European leagues.

The action starts …

Juventus scored first in the 43rd minute when Kolo Muani fired a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner, leaving Napoli’s goalkeeper Alex Meret with no chance. It was an impressive volley from the forward, who managed to find his rhythm after an unexpected deflection off Anguissa.

And game is on! Napoli equalized in the 57th minute. Frank Anguissa levels the score with a powerful header into the bottom left corner, thanks to an assist from Matteo Politano. Anguissa cleverly positions himself for the cross to the far post, and the former Villarreal star leaps high to direct it into the net.

What an incredible twist! Napoli went ahead in the 69th minute when Belgian striker “Big Rom” Romelu Lukaku scored a penalty with a left-footed shot right down the middle. The penalty was awarded after Manuel Locatelli fouled Scott McTominay. Lukaku caught goalkeeper Di Gregorio off guard with a perfectly placed shot, marking his 200th goal in the top five European leagues.

Stats before the game

Juventus holds the record for the most victories (71) and the highest number of goals scored (227) against Napoli in Serie A. The historical matchup features 37 wins for Napoli and 49 draws out of 157 encounters.

In recent times, Napoli has triumphed in six of their last ten Serie A clashes with Juventus, along with two draws and two losses, marking them as the team with the most wins against the Bianconeri in the top flight since 2020. As they prepare to meet again, Napoli enjoys a 13-point lead over Juventus in the standings, which is the third-largest margin in their historical matchups, following two instances where Napoli faced Juventus with a 16-point advantage (23 April 2023 and 17 April 1988).

Napoli are enjoying their record-breaking streak of consecutive home wins against Juventus in Serie A (five, with an overall score of 12-4) and could become only the third team to inflict more than five consecutive defeats on the Bianconeri away from home in the history of the top flight after Roma (six between 1937 and 1941), Inter (eight between 1935 and 1943) and Fiorentina (six between 1960 and 1964).

Napoli have won 16 of their first 21 rounds of this Serie A season (D2 L3) and could reach 17 wins in their first 22 games in a single top-flight campaign for only the third time in their history, after 2017/18 (the season they finished in second place) and 2022/23 (the year they last won the Scudetto).

Juventus (W8 D13) are one of only two teams still unbeaten this season in the top five European leagues, along with Paris Saint-Germain (W14 D4). Furthermore, after their success against Milan, the Bianconeri could win two matches in a row against teams that occupied one of the top eight positions in the Serie A table at the start of the day for the first time since December 2023 (against Roma and Napoli in that case).
