Italian Soccer Serie A

Hello, my friends. Here are the 2022-2023 Italian Serie A Week 2 Results / Second Round on Saturday 20, Sunday 21, and Monday 22 August 2022.  The highlights of the round are that only 3 teams have reached full points reaching 6 points: Inter, Napoli, and Roma.  Curiously, the 3 promoted teams from Serie B are in the last positions without points: Lecce, Cremonese, and Monza.

Inter with their second consecutive victory win defeating Spezia at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium.  Lautaro Martínez broke the deadlock in the 35th minute after an assist from Romero Lukaku.  Hakan Çalhanoglu doubled in the second half in the 52nd minute. The final blow to grab all 3 points is with the goal by Correa for the 3-0. Inter are unbeaten in all six previous games against Spezia between Serie A and the Italian Cup thanks to five wins and one draw.  In the next round, Inter will play the away game against Lazio, Spezia will play at home against Sassuolo.

The big duel between Atalanta and AC Milan ended with a draw at the Gewiss Stadium. Atalanta and Milan split the stakes grabbing 1 point each. To the advantage of Malinovskyi, Bennacer responds with a goal around the far post to equalize the 1-1 score. Not a good result for neither. Atalanta and Milan reach 4 points each.  Milan’s streak of consecutive victories stops at seven but the unbeaten run that has lasted for 18 league rounds continues.  In the next round Atalanta will play the away game against Hellas Verona while AC Milan will host Bologna.

Napoli win in grand style crushing Monza at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. Napoli showing a well coordinated game score four goals and remain at full points. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia with a brace, Victor Osimhen with a goal. Adding the cherry on top of the ice cream is Kim Min-Jae sealing the game with his goal in the 93rd minute and his first goal for the club.  For Monza, this is a hard defeat in the first away match of the season and a ranking that still reads 0 points.  In the next round, Napoli will play the way game against Fiorentina, while Monza will host Udinese.

AS Roma defeated Cremonese at the Olimpico di Roma Stadium.   Roma with full 6 points. Cremonese play openly for all 90 minutes and also touches the net on several occasions. Yet, Cremonese remain without points. In the end, however, it was the quality of Roma that prevailed. In the next round, Roma will play against Juventus at the Allianz Stadium, while Cremonese will play at home against Torino.

Sampdoria grabbed their first point this season after the goalless draw against Juventus at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium.  Sampdoria can celebrate because this “golden point” helped them to climb the Serie A Standing climbing from the 19th to the 16th position. Juventus climbed from the 8th to the 4th position. Previously, Juventus  won all their last six matches with Sampdoria in Serie A. Yet, Sampdoria stopped them today not allowing any goal.

Udinese and Salernitana ended with a draw at the Dacia Arena in Udine, Italy. A goalless draw with Udinese close to the lead in the 37th minute with the post that prevented Deulofeu from scoring the goal. The possible turning point of the match comes at the end of the first half when Nehuen Perez commits a very naive tactical foul and trips Mazzocchi going directly on the legs of the winger resulting with the red card. With Udinese reduced to ten men. Udinese goalkeeper Marco Silvestri denied every attempt and practically avoid the defeat at the Dacia.

Torino and Lazio ended  with a goalless draw at the Olimpico di Torino Stadium.  Torino play better in the first half without almost ever bothering goalkeeper Provedel. In the second half, Lazio had three clear scoring chances with Milinkovic, Ciro Immobile and Luis Alberto at the end. Yet, nothing work, the goal never arrived.  Torino and Lazio reached 4 points each.  In the next round of the championship, Lazio will play at home against Inter while Torino will play the away game against Cremonese.

The Derby  dell’Arno  between Empoli and Fiorentina ended with a goalless draw at the Carlo Castellani Stadium sharing with 1 point each.  This is the first point grabbed by Empoli while Fiorentina reached 4 points.  Empoli played with 10 players since the 66th minute following the red card to Sebastiano Luperto.  In the 93rd minute, Empoli remained with 9 players because all changes were already made and Nicolò Cambiaghi left the pitch for muscle problems.  In the third round, Empoli will play the away game against Lecce while Fiorentina will host Napoli.

Bologna and Hellas Verona ending with a draw at the Renato Dall’Ara Stadium.  On a positive note, these are the first points for both teams this season. Bologna remained with 10 players since the 78th minute. Referee Marcenaro gave a red card to Riccardo Orsolini in the 78th minute after a foul on Martin Hongla.  In the next round, Bologna will play the away game against AC Milan at San Siro, while Hellas Verona will play the home game against Atalanta.

Serie A Standing BEFORE the game:
Sampdoria, 19th position with 0 points and a negative goal difference of -2
Juventus, 8th position with 3 points and a positive goal difference of +3

Sampdoria grabbed their first point this season after ending the Serie A Week 2 game against Juventus with a draw on Monday 22 August 2022 at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium in Genoa, Italy.

Juventus struggled to create a game, Juan Cuadrado in the first half does not exploit a mistake by Augello, Rabiot does not punish an excellent goalkeeper Emil Audero from a few steps. In the second half Juventus see a goal from Rabiot canceled for offside, Kostic does not convert a cross from Kean in full recovery. Sampdoria stops Juventus in Marassi, 0-0 the final with Sampdoria who also found a crossbar with Leris, a Vlahovic autopalo and nearly scored in the final with Quagliarella.

✅  Stats before the game. The last Serie A draw between Sampdoria and Juventus dates back to 14 December 2014: a 1-1 draw by Evra and Gabbiadini – 13 Juventus and two Sampdoria successes since then.  Juventus have always won by scoring at least two goals in their last three away games with Sampdoria in the top league: only in the period between 1973 and 1977 did they record a longer streak of successes at the home of the Sampdoria with at least two goals to their credit (four matches). Sampdoria has not scored in two Serie A matches (also considering last season): the Sampdoria have not recorded a longer streak without goals in the competition since May 2016, in what were the last three benches of Vincenzo Montella with the Ligurians.

✅ Stats before the game. The next will be the 15th match between Roma and Cremonese in Serie A, the first since 11 February 1996 (3-0 for Roma, scored by Di Biagio, Balbo and Cappioli). The Giallorossi have won 10 times (2N, 2P), including the last three.
Cremonese won only one of the seven away games played in the top league against Roma (1N, 5P): on 3 October 1993 thanks to goals from Dezotti on a penalty and Tentoni (Benedetti for the Giallorossi).  Considering also the last game of last season, Roma have not conceded a goal from two Serie A matches: the Giallorossi have not done better in the competition since 2018 (a series of four under the guidance of Eusebio Di Francesco).
José Mourinho could become the third Roma coach in the era of three points to win (from 1994/95) to win both of the first two games played by the Giallorossi in a new Serie A championship for two consecutive seasons, after Luciano Spalletti (2006 / 07 and 2007/08) and Rudi Garcia (2013/14 and 2014/15).

AC Milan, 6th position with 3 points and a positive goal difference of +2
Atalanta, 7th position with 3 points and a positive goal difference of +2

The big duel between Atalanta and AC Milan for the Serie A Week 2 game ended with a draw on Sunday 21 August 2022 at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo, Italy. Atalanta and Milan split the stakes grabbing 1 point each. To the advantage of Malinovskyi, Bennacer responds with a goal around the far post to equalize the 1-1 score. Not a good result for neither. Atalanta and Milan reach 4 points each. In the next round Atalanta will play the away game against Hellas Verona while AC Milan will host Bologna.

Milan’s streak of consecutive victories stops at seven but the unbeaten run that has lasted for 18 league rounds continues. On the other hand, Atalanta’s fast of home wins is prolonged, since they have not found the three points at the Gewiss Stadium since last February 28, the day of the 4-0 over Sampdoria.

Atalanta opened the score in the 29th minute. Ruslan Malinovskyi defeats AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan with a left footed shot to the center. The assist is by Joakim Maehle.

AC Milan react in the second half. In the 67th minute, Ismaël Bennacer defeated Atalanta goalkeeper Juan Musso to equalize for the 1-1 with a left footed shot to the bottom left corner. The assist is by Alexis Saelemaekers.

✅  Stats before the game. Atalanta have lost each of their last three Serie A games against AC Milan, after being unbeaten in 10 of the previous 11 (4W, 6D). Atalanta could face four knockouts in a row against Milan in the top flight for the first time since 1993-1996. Atalanta disputes their home debut of the season in Serie A by hosting AC Milan for the first time since the 1955/56 season: on that occasion the Nerazzurri won 4-3 and among the challenges played in Bergamo, only on 24 December 1950 were more goals were scored (11, 7-4 in favor of Milan). With Stefano Pioli on the bench, Milan have always won the first two games of a new Serie A championship: 2020/21 against Bologna and Crotone, 2021/22 against Sampdoria and Cagliari. Atalanta, victorious in Genoa against Sampdoria in the first round of this tournament, have won both the first two games of a new Serie A championship only four times in their history: in 1949/50, in 1964/65, in 2008 / 09 and in 2020/21.
