Sassuolo, 19th position with 29 points and a negative goal difference of -29

Genoa won the Serie A Week 36 game against Sassuolo on Sunday 12 May 2024 at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium in Genova, Italy. Genoa comeback to win a match that saw Sassuolo in the lead with a penalty from Andrea Pinamonti. In the second half in just a few minutes, first Badelj and then an own goal from Kumbulla reversed the result and gave the home team the three points. Sassuolo remained stuck in penultimate place with 29 points, but thanks to the defeats of Cagliari, Empoli and Frosinone, they can still hope for salvation. The match in a week between the Emilians and the Sardinians will be decisive. Genoa continues its good run of form and momentarily overtakes Monza, reaching 46 points.

Sassuolo took the lead in the 31st minute. Andrea Pinamonti defeated Hellas Verona goalkeeper by converting a penalty with a right-footed shot to the bottom left corner. The penalty was conceded by Koni De Winter after a foul on Armand Laurienté.

Genoa equalized in the 56th minute. Milan Badelj defeated Sassuolo goalkeeper Andrea Consigli with a headed shot to the top right corner. The assist is by Morten Thorsby following a corner conceded by Pedro Obiang.

Genoa overturned the result in the 63rd minute following an own goal by Marash Kumbulla.

✅  Stats before the game: Sassuolo have won eight matches in Serie A against Genoa (D5, L6), only against Hellas Verona (nine) and Inter (10) have they achieved more successes in the top flight. In the nine matches between Genoa and Sassuolo in Serie A played in Liguria the same result has never been repeated twice in a row; four home wins, two away and three draws, including one in the most recent match on 17 October 2021. Genoa have scored three goals in their last two Serie A matches and have not reached three games in a row with at least three goals scored in the competition since May 2015. Genoa won their last Serie A home match (3-0 against Cagliari) and the last time they achieved two home successes in a row in the competition, they did so without conceding a goal (1-0 against Salernitana and Verona between October and November). Sassuolo won their last championship match, against Inter, and only once this season have they achieved two successes in a row, in September, again against the Nerazzurri and against Juventus in that case.

Italian Soccer Serie A

👉    Hello, my friends. Here are the 2023-2024 Italian Serie A Week 35 RESULTS / Thirty-fifth Round on Friday 3, Saturday 4, Sunday 5, and Monday 6 May 2024.

Inter won the 2023-2024 Italy’s Champions winning the Scudetto last week after defeating AC Milan in the Milan Derby.   Inter’s 20th Italian league title and earn the Nerazzurri a second star on their shirts.  Inter won the Serie A Week 34 game against Torino thanks to a brace by Hakan Çalhanoglu reaching 89 points.

Sassuolo beats Inter 1-0 and obtained three precious points in the fight for survival.  The decisive goal by Laurienté in the 20th minute. The Nerazzurri have a lot of ball possession but don’t create clear scoring opportunities. Inter’s only defeat in this championship came against Sassuolo (1-2 on 27 September) and today. Sassuolo won both seasonal Serie A matches against Inter for the first time since 2017/18. Sassuolo are still in the relegation zone in the 19th position and this victory is an added boost to continue the battle for salvation.

AC Milan failed their mission to defeat Genoa to claim all 3 points. The game ended with a draw.   This draw is like a victory for Genoa and a flop for AC Milan.  Surely, the ex-Milan player Alberto Gilardino and now Genoa Coach can celebrate this draw. Nevertheless, Milan kept the 2nd position reaching 71 points while Genoa remained in the 12th position with 42 points being -2 points below Monza in the 11th position. One of the match’s highlights happened in the stands and not on the pitch. The Milan fans in the Curva Sud remained silent throughout the match.  It was a sign of protest to show their displeasure with the team. To make matters worse, the fans left with 10 minutes remaining. You bet that the message to the Club is loud and clear to improve the team with better signings.

Torino and Bologna ended with a goalless draw.  This is Torino’s third consecutive 0-0 at home, the ninth of the season. However, Bologna are 5 points away from arithmetically qualifying for the Champions League.   Bologna is also chasing Europe, as they want to crown a memorable season so far with the historic qualification for the Champions League.  The search for the European dream continues for Ivan Juric’s Torino, currently 4 points behind Napoli and Fiorentina. However, the Granata are in a moment of decline having achieved only one victory in the last five championship games.

Juventus and Roma failed to win.  The game ended with a draw helping more Juventus because they move closer to qualifying for the next Champions League. Juventus are maintaining a two-point lead over Bologna and six over Roma. The Giallorossi move to 60 points but with Atalanta, playing tomorrow in Salerno and with two games less, who could catch them.

Inter “Italy’s New Champions” suffered an away defeat in the Serie A Week 35 game against Sassuolo on Saturday 4 May 2024 at the Mapei Stadium in Sassuolo, Italy. Sassuolo beats Inter 1-0 and obtained three precious points for the fight for survival. The decisive goal by Laurienté in the 20th minute. Sassuolo took the lead in the 20th minute. Armand Laurienté defeated Inter goalkeeper with a right footed shot to the top left corner. The assist is by Josh Doig.

Stats before the game: No draw in the 10 matches at the MAPEI Stadium between Sassuolo and Inter in Serie A: four victories for the Emilians and six successes for the Lombards (including those in the four most recent matches). Sassuolo have won only one of their last 15 Serie A matches (D4, L10), in the only match in the period in which they kept a clean sheet: 1-0 against Frosinone on March 9th. Inter have achieved 89 points in 34 matches this season and only twice in their history have they crossed the 90 point mark in an entire single Serie A season: 91 in 2020/21 and 97 in 2006/07. Inter is the team that has kept the most clean sheets (20) this season in the top five European leagues; the Nerazzurri have never recorded more clean sheets in a single season in their history in Serie A (20 also in 1988/89 with Giovanni Trapattoni as coach).
