Portugal beat Slovenia in the UEFA EURO 2024 Round of 16 on Monday 1 July 2024 at the Frankfurt Arena in Germany. Portugal and Slovenia meet again 3 months after the friendly match which Slovenia won 2-0 on March 26. Sweet revenge, Portugal eliminated Slovenia on penalties and advances to the Quarterfinals. After 120 minutes, it took penalties for Portugal who never makes mistakes and found the hero of the evening in goalkeeper Diogo Costa who saved three out of three penalties kicked by Slovenia from Josip Ilicic, Jure Balkovec and Benjamin Verbic. In the quarterfinals it will be France-Portugal. Costa is the first goalkeeper to save 3 penalties in the EUROS.

After a scoreless 90 minutes, Cristiano Ronaldo had a chance to put Portugal ahead from the penalty spot in the first half of extra time, but goalkeeper Jan Oblak saved. Cristiano was in tears feeling the pressure and had to be consoled by his teammates. The moment to regroup arrived in penalty shootouts and Cristiano shoot the first penalty and converted it. A sign of relief for him and for his millions fans.

Despite Portugal finishing top of Group F with six points, Portugal had an unexpected defeat against Georgia. It was Martinez first defeat after 12 games in charge since taking over from long-time manager Fernando Santos following a disappointing loss to Morocco in the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals.

Stats before the game: This will be only the second match ever between Portugal and Slovenia; the previous one dates back to March this year: Slovenia won a 2-0 friendly in Ljubljana.  Portugal holds the record for winning by the largest margin in the round of 16 between European Championships and World Cups: 6-1 against Switzerland in the 2022 World Cup. Slovenia will play its first match in the knockout phase between the European Championships and the World Cup, while for Portugal this will be the 26th match of this type. However, after winning EURO 2016, Portugal lost three of four matches in the knockout phase between the European Championships and the World Cup (W1). The defeat against Georgia in the last match ended Portugal’s streak of 12 consecutive victories in official competitions (excluding friendlies).   Slovenia recorded 32% ball possession at EURO 2024, only two teams have progressed from the group stage in a single edition of the European Championships with lower ball possession: Iceland at EURO 2016 (29%) and Sweden at EURO 2020 (30%). Only Germany (69% and 57) recorded a higher percentage of ball possession and attempted more total shots than Portugal (67% and 53) in the EURO 2024 group stage; furthermore, Julian Nagelsmann’s team (16) was also the only one to have conceded fewer shots than Portugal in this first phase of the tournament (23).
