Napoli on the road to Turin for Juventus, Sat. 23 May 2015

Rafael Benitez’s men have recorded seven victories, four draws and seven defeats away from the Stadio San Paolo in this Serie A season

Having set out to challenge Juventus and Roma for the Serie A crown at the start of the season, Napoli kicked off their campaign with a last-gasp 2-1 win away at Genoa on the opening day, secured by Jonathan de Guzman’s injury-time strike.

Late September then brought about a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Udinese at the Stadio Friuli, before Jose Callejon’s first-half strike sealed all three points in a 1-0 triumph over Sassuolo.

Two hard-fought stalemates against Inter (2-2) and Atalanta (1-1) followed in the subsequent month, with Gonzalo Higuain then deciding the sole action of November as Napoli registered a 1-0 success away at Fiorentina.

With winter approaching, Duvan Zapata’s stoppage-time equaliser salvaged a point in a 1-1 draw versus Sampdoria, before the Neapolitan-based outfit rounded 2014 off with a disappointing 2-0 reverse to Milan at the San Siro.

The cloud, however, was soon lifted in the maiden action of the new year, Rafael Benitez’s men recording an impressive 4-1 victory over Cesena in Emilia-Romagna.

Two further triumphs against Lazio (1-0) and Chievo (2-1) followed before the Partenopei saw both their title bid and European aspirations take a significant hit on Valentine’s Day after Palermo ruled victorious with a 3-1 win in Sicily.

The result seemed to hamper Napoli in their subsequent encounters, as they suffered a trio of consecutive defeats to Torino (1-0), Hellas Verona (2-0) and Roma (1-0) throughout the course of March and start of April.

But the rut was soon brought to a halt after Jose Callejon and Manolo Gabbiadini struck either side of Antonio Balzano’s own goal to record a fine 3-0 success away at Cagliari.

That respite proved brief though as Empoli then became the seventh team to beat Napoli, coming out on top in a six-goal thriller, before already relegated Parma held their own in a 2-2 draw at the end of last month.

With only two domestic games of the season remaining, Benitez’s men currently lie fourth in the standings, three points behind Lazio who occupy the third and final Champions League spot.

If Napoli want to reconfirm their place in Europe’s elite competition next season, they’ll have to claim a crucial victory against a Juventus side unbeaten on home soil in the league since January 2013.

Allegri keen to end home campaign on a high

The boss looks ahead to tomorrow’s final game of the season at Juventus Stadium against Napoli: “It’s important for us to maintain our unbeaten home record. We’ll have the Scudetto and Coppa Italia trophies there – it will be a night to remember”

Massimiliano Allegri has called on his team to add further gloss to tomorrow’s “night to remember” by putting in a strong performance against a Napoli side looking to dent Juventus’ unbeaten home record in Serie A this season.

While the outcome of the match will have no impact on the Bianconeri’s campaign, the visiting Partenopei still have hopes of securing a place in next season’s Champions League, meaning they will be going all out for three points at Juventus Stadium.

And with the Scudetto and Coppa Italia trophies to be paraded in front of the fans, Allegri is eager to ensure Rafael Benitez’s men don’t gatecrash the party.

Speaking to the media in Vinovo, the 47-year-old said: “We have two games left, starting with Napoli tomorrow. It’s a match that counts for nothing in terms of our goal of winning the Scudetto. However, it’s important in terms of staying unbeaten at home.

“We need to play well from a technical standpoint, as we must keep working on that and improving. We need to show intensity, character and above all good team play to produce great performances. This in turn will allow us to achieve results.

“I think tomorrow is going to be an important day as not only do we play against Napoli, but we will also have the league trophy there and the Coppa Italia too. It’s going to be a night to remember.”

After his team bring down the curtain on their home campaign tomorrow, Allegri confirmed he will be handing his men a short breather before their Champions League final preparations kick off in earnest.

“There’ll be a three-day rest after Saturday, because they’ve not had a half-day off since late February. It’s important to work, but it’s vital to rest too. Afterwards, we need to prepare for the final, but we need to do it calmly. We mustn’t create excessive stress and anxiety about going to play in Berlin. Otherwise, when we get there, we’ll barely be able to run.”

When asked about the prospect of facing Barcelona the Tuscan tactician admitted his men would not be in for an easy ride, predicting a “tough match” in the German capital.

Allegri claims a fearless performance by those in the black and white stripes will be key to their chances of success, as they seek to upset the odds by overturning heavily-fancied Barcelona.

“I think it’ll be a very tough match. However, as we saw on Wednesday night, the league table said it should have been a foregone conclusion, but that certainly wasn’t the case. The final in Berlin will be the same.

“We can’t be afraid of Barcelona. They have three fantastic players up front. Then they have Iniesta in midfield – he’s the player that dictates the way the team plays.

“We need to try and spoil the party and put a dampener on Xavi’s farewell. He has been an extraordinary player for Barcelona and in world football as a whole.”

Barcelona host Deportivo in final La Liga fixture

The Spanish champions entertain 17th-placed Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday evening, with midfield talisman Xavi expected to make his final appearance at the Nou Camp

La Liga champions Barcelona will bring down the curtain on their league campaign when they host Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday evening, in a match that is expected to see Xavi make his final appearance at the Nou Camp.

The midfielder, one of the driving forces behind a team that has won seven La Liga titles in 10 years, confirmed on Thursday that he will move on to pastures new with Qatari outfit Al Sadd at the end of the season, signalling an end to his 24-year association with the Catalan giants.

While Luis Enrique’s men clinched their 23rd domestic title with last weekend’s triumph over Atletico Madrid, it is a different story entirely for 17th-placed Deportivo, who will be looking to get a result that prevents them from getting sucked back into the bottom three on the final day.

The hosts, who meet Juventus in the Champions League final on Saturday 6 June, are tipped to rest a few big names ahead of next week’s Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao.

Happy birthday, Romulo!

The midfielder turns 28 today. Many happy returns from everyone at Juventus!

Romulo is celebrating his 28th birthday today.

It’s the first anniversary he’s spending with the Bianconeri following his arrival from Hellas Verona back in August 2014.

Romulo, who has tasted success in both Serie A and the Coppa Italia this campaign, is currently sidelined with a thigh injury and will miss the season’s run-in.

All associated with Juventus wish Romulo many happy returns and a continued speedy recovery.
