Juve sign off Serie A term with draw in Verona

Roberto Pereyra and Fernando Llorente twice put Juventus in front at the Bentegodi, with Verona fighting back through Luca Toni and Juanito Gomez.

Juventus rounded off their 33rd Scudetto-winning Serie A campaign with this evening’s 2-2 draw against Hellas Verona at the Bentegodi.

A hard-fought but ultimately unspectacular first-half came to life when Roberto Pereyra picked out the top corner with an incredible effort on 42 minutes, his second in as many league matches against the Gialloblu.

The hosts drew level soon after the break as Luca Toni rounded off a swift counter-attack with a crisp finish but the Bianconeri promptly edged their noses back in front, Fernando Llorente tapping home after having the ball cut back into his path by Simone Padoin.

Juventus had a golden opportunity to rubber stamp all three points in the dying stages, only for Carlos Tevez to see his penalty saved by Rafael, leaving Verona to go straight up down the other end and snatch an injury-time equaliser through the same man who levelled matters in last year’s corresponding fixture, Juanito Gomez.

One of the main threads of interest in the run-up to the game was the duel between two of the three frontrunners for this season’s Serie A top goalscorer title: Toni, on 21, and Tevez, one behind on 20. Both had opportunities to open the scoring inside the first 10 minutes, Toni miscuing his effort under pressure from Gigi Buffon and the Argentine sending a low strike straight into the hands of Rafael.

Verona showed greater adventure going forward during the opening quarter of the encounter but Juventus did have a few chances of their own, Claudio Marchisio volleying into the ground and over the bar from a promising position after receiving Tevez’s knockdown.

Just past the half-hour mark the intensity edged up a notch, with chances in quick succession for both sides. First Emil Halfredsson did brilliantly to send in a cross from the byline in the direction of Toni, whose touch took the ball just past the post, before Llorente rattled the woodwork with a terrific shot on the volley moments later.

If Gialloblu shotstopper Rafael had been rescued by his crossbar for Llorente’s effort, there was little he could do three minutes before the break when Pereyra cut inside and bent an incredible 25-yard strike into the top corner, giving Juventus the advantage at the midway point.

It took the hosts just a few second-half minutes to draw level. A quick counter-attack, led by a spirited Halfredsson burst forward, saw the ball worked into the path of Toni, who dispatched a clinical strike beyond Buffon.

Juventus, however, were in no mood to sit back and regained their lead on 57 minutes. A wonderful Andrea Pirlo dink into the box picked out Padoin, whose cut-back from the byline presented Llorente with a simple finish.

As the game edged towards its conclusion, the visitors were awarded a penalty with two minutes remaining when Rafael Marquez upended Llorente into the box. But just as it seemed that Tevez was all set to wrap up all three points, Rafael pulled off a strong save to deny the Argentine from 12 yards.

This galvanised the hosts and, after second-half substitute Simone Pepe was shown a straight red for his challenge from behind on Mattia Valoti, they secured a share of the spoils when Juanito rose highest at the far post to hold the Bianconeri to a 2-2 draw at the Bentegodi for the second year in succession.

Three key Gialloblu men to watch out for

Juventus.com takes a look at Hellas Verona trio Rafael, Panagiotis Tachtsidis and Luca Toni in the feature’s final installment of the 2014/15 season

Sole Scudetto winners in 1985, Hellas Verona approach their final match of this domestic term 13th in Italy’s top flight with 45 points.

Since reconfirming their Serie A safety for a third consecutive season last month, the Gialloblu’s recent form has been indifferent, winning one, drawing three and losing one of their previous five domestic encounters.

Andrea Mandorlini’s men, however, will want to bring their campaign to a close in style when a Juventus side, who are unbeaten in their last five league games, arrive in Veneto on Saturday evening.

Verona will also be out improve a record which has seen them pick up just two points in their previous seven league meetings with the Bianconeri, and claiming a positive result up against the newly-crowned champions would be a step in the right direction.

Juventus.com casts a glace over veteran goalkeeper Rafael, midfield enforcer Panagiotis Tachtsidis and evergreen forward Luca Toni who will all be endeavouring to make life difficult for Massimiliano Allegri’s troops at the Bentegodi.

Name: Rafael
Age:
33
Position:
Goalkeeper

Brazilian shotstopper Rafael is now in his eighth season at the club after signing from Sao Bento back in 2007.

The 33-year-old was virtually an ever-present during Hellas’ first campaign back in the big time and has made over 250 appearances for the Bentegodi outfit.

Despite being the Gialloblu’s customary number one, Rafael has played in 19 league games, sharing the responsibility alongside Francesco Benussi this term.

The ex-Santos star put in a man of the match performance during last month’s surprise 1-0 victory away at Fiorentina.

Name: Panagiotis Tachtsidis
Age:
24
Position:
Defensive/Central midfielder

Tough tackler Tachtsidis is coming towards the end of a season-long loan from fellow Serie A outfit Genoa.

Normally deployed in front of the defence, the 23-year old is known for his combative nature and ability to break up play and begin attacks.

The midfielder, who possesses excellent passing ability, has also chipped in with three goals and two assists in 33 appearances this campaign, instilling himself as a firm fans’ favourite.

Tachtsidis played in all four of Greece’s matches at the 2014 World Cup before they were eliminated 5-3 on penalties by Costa Rica at the last 16 stage.

Name: Luca Toni
Age:
38
Position:
Striker

Club captain Toni is the team’s main marksman and at the grand old age of 38, continues to demonstrate his eye for goal, bagging 41 goals over the last two Serie A seasons, more than any player.

A World Cup winner in 2006, the former Juventus forward– who spent 12 months in Turin – currently leads the top flight’s scoring charts with 21 strikes, one ahead of Argentinean duo Carlos Tevez and Mauro Icardi.

With strength, aerial prowess and power, the former Bayern Munich man has become a handful for defenders to mark over the years and will be the main individual to keep tabs on in Veneto on Saturday evening.

Hellas on home soil

Seven triumphs, four stalemates and seven defeats show how the Gialloblu have fared at the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi this term

A spot-kick from former Bianconero Luca Toni and Eros Pisano’s own goal allowed Hellas Verona to kick off their Serie A campaign on home soil with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Palermo in mid-September.

Genoa were next to make the trip to the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi nine days later, pulling off a 2-2 draw in which current Juventus forward Alessandro Matri bagged a brace.

The Gialloblu immediately got back to winning ways at the start of the following month, loan signing Panagiotis Tachtsidis scoring a minute from the end in a 1-0 triumph against Cagliari.

Even though it seemed Hellas were becoming a tough nut to crack in front of their own faithful, Milan managed to become the first team to leave with all three points when they ran out 3-1 winners after the October international break.

Toni’s penalty then salvaged a 1-1 stalemate versus Lazio on Halloween weekend, before Fiorentina (2-1), Sampdoria (3-1) and Chievo (1-0) all recorded vital victories in the remaining matches of 2014. The latter result, decided by Alberto Paloschi’s goal nine minutes from time, was only the fifth top flight Derby della Scala.

Determined to put their derby day disappointment behind them, Andrea Mandorlini’s Gialloblu made it an unbeaten start to the new year by dispatching Parma (3-1) and Atalanta (1-0).

February proved an indifferent month as Hellas first suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Torino before then demonstrating their mettle against title challengers Roma in a 1-1 stalemate.

After Napoli were made to feel the force of the Gialloblu’s unpredictability in March, losing 2-0 courtesy of Toni’s brace, Mandorlini’s men subsequently let a three-goal lead slip, ultimately drawing 3-3 with Serie A strugglers Cesena.

Inter then came and conquered the Bentegodi with a 3-0 success, before Hellas edged a five-goal thriller against Sassuolo; Toni once again at the double to down the Neroverdi and ensure his side all but sealed their top flight survival for another season.

The beginning of May saw Udinese rule triumphant in a 1-0 win, with the Gialloblu claiming all three points during their following encounter: a 2-1 victory versus Empoli.

Despite having nothing to play for on Saturday evening, Hellas will attempt to register their tenth all-time Serie A success over Juventus when they lock horns with the newly-crowned champions in Veneto.

Corriere dello Sport even calling it “the last shame, Fifa have re-elected Blatter!”   The Italian Football Federation (FIG) is supporting Platini.  Tutto Sport headline, just love it.. says Bla Bla Blatter!  In other words keep the bla bla bla…

Oh well, as for AC Milan transfer market… hello, hello, hello, bad news for President Silvio Berlusconi because despite he is saying that Ibrahimovic will come to Milan, the headline is all about the contrary.  “Ibra feezing Milan”  However, Berlusconi is still optimistic about coach Carlo Ancelotti.  Here is the situation, Ibrahimovic’s agent Raiola says no.   Simply put, Berlusconi not considering Filippo Inzaghi as a top level for Milan and most likely it is his last game today against Atalanta…. Your take?

As for Champions League headline, Elkann encouraging Juventus to defeat Barcelona.
