Thursday’s international round-up

Stefano Sturaro’s Italy Under-21s fall 2-1 to Sweden in their opening game of the European Championships in the Czech Republic

During Thursday’s solitary international action involving the Bianconeri, Italy Under-21s, featuring Stefano Sturaro among their ranks, were defeated 2-1 by Sweden in their opening Group B game of this year’s European Championships.

The Azzurrini had initially taken the lead at the Andruv Stadion when Alexander Milosevic was sent off for a foul on Andrea Belotti in the Swedes’ box, allowing Domenico Berardi to convert the spot-kick just shy of the half-hour mark.

Despite being down to ten men, Sweden came out in the second half with more purpose and equalised on 56 minutes through John Guidetti who steered home after Italy had failed to clear a corner.

Bianconeri midfielder Sturaro then saw red for Luigi di Biagio’s side, before Kiese Thelin completed the Swedish comeback on 85 minutes, sending Francesco Bardi the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Elsewhere in the group, Portugal, who face Italy at the Stadion Miroslava Valenty on Sunday, overcame England 1-0 to go second behind Sweden.

Tonight sees Arturo Vidal’s Chile in action, with the Copa America hosts facing Bolivia at the Estadio Nacional de Chile from 00.30 CEST.

A victory for La Roja, who currently sit top of Group A, would see them take their place in the competition’s knockout phase which kicks off next Wednesday.

Argentina register first win, Italy overcome

Carlos Tevez and Roberto Pereyra make late substitute appearances in Argentina’s 1-0 win over Uruguay, while Andrea Pirlo and Leonardo Bonucci feature in Italy’s 1-0 friendly defeat at the hands of Portugal

Carlos Tevez and Roberto Pereyra’s Argentina got their first three points of the 2015 Copa America tournament with Tuesday night’s 1-0 victory over Uruguay, decided by Sergio Aguero’s second-half winner.

A moment of magic was required to unlock the door for Gerardo Martino’s men, and Aguero provided it on 56 minutes when his diving header turned Manchester City team-mate Pablo Zabaleta’s cross beyond Fernando Muslera.

The matchwinner was replaced by Juventus forward Tevez in the closing stages of the game, while Pereyra made his first appearance in the competition when he came off the bench with one minute remaining in place of Angel Di Maria.

The result lifts Argentina up into top spot, level on points with second-placed Paraguay, with one group game remaining on Saturday against Jamaica.

Elsewhere, a second-half Eder goal condemned Italy to their first defeat under Antonio Conte in Tuesday night’s friendly against Portugal in Geneva.

In the absence of Gigi Buffon the Azzurri were captained by Andrea Pirlo, who, along with Leonardo Bonucci, played the entire 90 minutes of the encounter.

The midfield maestro created the best opportunity of the game for his Bianconeri team-mate on 52 minutes, only for the central defender to see his effort cannon back off the upright.
