Allegri: “Great night of football on the way” ahead of Inter

Massimiliano Allegri looks ahead to Sunday’s Derby d’Italia meeting with Stefano Pioli’s in-form Inter at Juventus Stadium

A clash of quality

“Both Juventus and Inter have the potential to win the league; the latter have picked up 25 points from a possible 30 and as far as I can see will be right in the mix for the title next season, even if there is still all to play for this year.”

“I have no doubt that tomorrow’s game will live up to its billing. In Higuain and Icardi, we’ll be seeing two of the world game’s best strikers out on the field. Whoever the opposition, we need to approach every game with the same focus: we’ve got three games in seven days coming up and each of them are worth three points.”

Seizing the moment

“Football is all about how you react to the key moments, both in the middle of matches and throughout the season as a whole. Sometimes you need to stick to your guns, sometimes you need to make a change.

“It’s not as if we are that much better now than we were before the New Year when we won 15 games out of 18. Perhaps in the first half of the campaign we were becoming a little too conservative and lazy, assuming that we could just turn up and win.

“Your commitment on the field needs to be at its maximum every week and every player needs to pull in the same direction and do their part in every department. If we do that, then we have a great chance of winning the Scudetto, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League.”

Team news

“Marchisio is fit to play; it is normal that two months after coming back from injury, he needed a bit of time to consolidate his fitness. Barzagli on the other hand hasn’t trained today but may still be part of the squad.

“Dybala is playing himself into form and fitness. With such intense attention on him, he’s had a strange year but that’s to be expected for a player who has the quality to win the Ballon d’Or.

“We’ve got great strength in depth on the flanks, not least down the right where Lichtsteiner has been terrific of late. Stephan, like Dani Alves, will be a critical player for us in the remaining months of the season.”

Merci Patrice

“I wish Patrice all the best in Marseille and would like to thank him for everything he gave to us. His character and experience both on and off the field were so important in helping our younger players to grow. It’s natural that a player of his focus and determination is going to struggle not playing week in, week out.”

Alex Sandro: “Inter a key stage in our season”

Brazilian wing-back Alex Sandro previews Sunday’s showdown at home to Inter before looking further ahead at the Champions League tie against his former club Porto

At the races for Inter

“We know that Sunday’s match against Inter will be tough and it’s one of those which everyone would like to play in. We respect our opponents, who are brimming with top players, like Mauro Icardi who’s capable of scoring whenever he has a sniff of goal, so we need to make sure that we’re on our toes. Nonetheless, we’ll be going out there to win, especially as it’s at home game in front of our fans.

“Winning would represent another important step towards our season objectives. The Scudetto is still a long way away, however. There are many more matches left to play and we need to keep putting in the hard yards.”

Gonzalo the go-to man

“Gonzalo (Higuain) is an intelligent player with great movement. He’s not the kind of striker who stands still. On the contrary, he’s very clever with the way he breaks into space and he’s an excellent understanding of the game and our patterns of play.

Prepared for Porto

“Whenever Porto take on the top teams in front of their supporters, they treat it like the biggest match of their lives. I’ve still got a lot of friends in Portugal and I know how much their home games mean for them.

“I’m honestly not very worried about returning to the Estadio do Dragao. I’m just concentrating on playing well there on the night.”

Juventus vs Inter: key names and numbers, Sunday 5 February 2017

Traditionally one of the biggest matches of the Serie A season, Juventus.com provides a bumper preview for Sunday’s Derby d’Italia against Inter
Derby d’Italia data

Juventus vs Inter. Bianconeri vs Nerazzurri. Two of Italy’s most successful clubs lock horns once more this weekend under the watchful eye of world football.

It is the Old Lady who hold the upper hand in this fixture and victory on Sunday would be their 80th in the league against their old rivals. Inter, for the record, currently sit on 46 wins, while there have been 42 draws.

Now focusing purely on their encounters in Turin makes even better reading for the reigning champions: 83 matches, 57 home wins, 15 draws and only 11 losses.

Rare as they are, one of those defeats did happen to come at Juventus Stadium when in November 2012 a Diego Milito brace and Rodrigo Palacio strike sealed a 3-1 scoreline for the side then managed by Andrea Stramaccioni.

That game aside, it’s been a very positive picture for the Bianconeri on home territory, winning six and drawing three of the last 10 meetings in front of their fans.

Shaping up for Sunday

Since losing away to Fiorentina on 15 January, Juventus have picked up back to back wins over Lazio and Sassuolo, keeping clean sheets in both matches and generally dictating matches from start to finish, facing very few, if any, opposition attacks in the process.

This has coincided with Allegri’s introduction of a more attack-minded 4-2-3-1 formation, in which all of his forward-thinking star players have shone so far from Gonzalo Higuain at the cutting edge of the line-up to Miralem Pjanic and Sami Khedira in midfield via Mario Mandzukic, Paulo Dybala and Juan Cuadrado in between.

The age-old theory that attack can sometimes be the best form of defence is certainly ringing true of late and the Bianconeri are looking for what would be a fifth league game without conceding in their last six this Sunday.

After seven wins on the spin, Inter are the form side in Serie A and have risen from 11th to fourth place under Stefano Pioli, nine points off table-topping Juve.

The only blot on the Nerazzurri’s recent record is Tuesday night’s home defeat to Lazio in the Coppa Italia quarter-final, which leaves them with only the league to focus on and the aim now will surely be of continuing their climb into the top three and qualification for Champions League football next season – an objective that had seemed heavily compromised by their slow start under former coach Frank de Boer.

Key individual duels

Sunday’s Derby d’Italia will pit a number of exceptional talents against one another and there could well be several individual duels taking place within the match itself.

At first glance, the battle for supremacy in attack between Gonzalo Higuain and Mauro Icardi is perhaps the most eye-catching. Pipita’s eight goals in his last six games has seen him draw level with Inter’s frontman and fellow Argentine Icardi at the summit of the Serie A scoring charts (15 goals) and, while team victory will count for much more, both men will be keen to add to their tallies at Juventus Stadium.

Moving into midfield, there’s the interesting face-off between Miralem Pjanic and Joao Mario. New signings for their respective clubs, both players have settled in well to their new surroundings with key contributions in the final third. Pjanic has eight goals and nine assists to his name in all competitions, while Inter’s Portuguese playmaker has set up three and scored twice in his last six league outings.

Looking at the two rearguards, Leonardo Bonucci has established himself as the complete centre-back in recent seasons – adding fine distribution and a goalscoring touch to his usual defensive duties – and he deservedly received recognition through his inclusion in the FifPro World XI in December as well as the Best Player award for the 2015/16 Serie A campaign at Monday’s Gran Galà del Calcio.

Among the men set to line up at the other end of the field for Inter will most likely be Jeison Murillo. The Colombian has won 71.8 per cent of his tackles and 62 per cent of his 50-50s, chipping in with 62 defensive clearances in the process.

Then there’s the battle of the goalies: Gianluigi Buffon and Samir Handanovic. At the age of 39, Juve’s iconic keeper and captain continues to show razor sharp reflexes, such as his double save from Matteo Politano and Alessandro Matri against Sassuolo. Opposite number Handanovic is also enjoying a strong season between the sticks – his fifth for the Nerazzurri – and has kept five clean sheets in his last seven Serie A outings.
