Champions League: Stephan Lichtsteiner staying grounded after defeating Porto

The Swiss Express remains wary ahead of the return leg against Porto: “A great team effort tonight but they only need one goal then it’s anyone’s game again”

Two away goals and a clean sheet means it’s advantage Juve in our Champions League last-16 tie against Porto but Stephan Lichtsteiner refuses to get carried away.

Speaking after Wednesday’s impressive 2-0 victory at the Estadio Do Dragao, the Swiss full-back was adamant the job is anything but done going into the return leg in Turin on 14 March.

“We must play the same way as tonight when it comes to the return leg,” he insisted. “Football is unforgiving: you only have to concede one goal and suddenly it’s anyone’s game again. We must keep our feet on the ground and keep pushing on.”

The 33-year-old also expressed his satisfaction at making his first appearance of the season in Europe’s elite competition but was keen to place the emphasis on the collective.

“It was great to get back out there. I’ve learnt a lot in the last few months and I’m happy to be playing in this competition again but besides my personal feelings it’s about the team and our collective performance tonight.

“Football is a team game and the team comes before everything else. Anyone who plays this sport wants to go all the way and win the trophy but it’s always the team that wins.”

Champions League: Massimiliano Allegri lauds intelligent Juve display

“Porto battened down the hatches but we used the wide areas intelligently. We could even have had a third”

Massimiliano Allegri was full of praise for his side after a commanding performance earned Juve a 2-0 success at the Estadio Do Dragao.

“We struggled in the first five minutes but that was it. After that we took charge and bossed proceedings, even when it was still 11 v 11,” the coach told journalists following the Bianconeri’s last-16 first-leg triumph in Porto.

“Even when you’re playing against a team with ten men a lot of the time you don’t have that man advantage when you attack. Porto battened down the hatches but we used the wide areas intelligently.

“We could even have had a third but it’s still an excellent result to take into the return leg.

“The lads were on the ball tonight and everyone played their part – that’s vital as we go into the business end of the season still chasing three targets.

“There’s plenty of room for improvement but what we must never lose is our desire, enthusiasm and confidence.

“We’re not an easy side to play against in space. We’ve got skilful, pacy players who can cause havoc for the opposition.

“Our passing could be a bit more free-flowing. We shift the ball around pretty well but we could do it even better. We don’t look to play it forward enough.”

Allegri also commented on Marko Pjaca’s progress, after the Croatian scored the all-important opener in Portugal.

“I’ve noticed a change in Marko in the last few days – a big change. He’s realised that he needs to lift his game and there’s been a very clear difference.

“He’s young and youngsters need time, patience and advice.”

Champions League: Pjanic, “We wore them out and struck at the right time”

Miralem’s verdict on Porto win: “We knew they could defend really well but we didn’t rush things and we’ve come away with a massive result”

Miralem Pjanic believes Juventus got the result their composed, measured approach deserved after they beat Porto 2-0 on Wednesday night.

The Bianconeri played a patient game as the sides remain locked together at 0-0 until a quick-fire double from Marko Pjaca and Dani Alves put them firmly in the driving seat ahead of the return leg.

“The boss told us to stay calm and not rush things,” the Bosnian maestro revealed after the game. “We followed his orders and we’ve managed to come away with a massive result.

“We managed the whole match well – the first half too, although in the opening 45 minutes our final ball was lacking at times.

“We studied Porto beforehand and we knew they were very good at defending. They did even better after going down to 10 men.

“But we kept playing our game, biding our time and slowly wearing them out, then struck at the right moment.”

“We thoroughly deserve this win because we managed the game really well, especially as Porto are used to playing matches like this. Now we have to make sure we finish the job in Turin.”

Champions League: Marko’s joy

“2-0 is a great result to take back to our place but we must remain focused – it only takes a moment for everything to flip on its head in football”

What a way to score your first goal for Juve. You enter the fray midway through the second half of a delicately poised Champions League knockout tie and within five minutes you’ve broken the deadlock with a clinical finish.

That’s what Marko Pjaca did at Porto tonight as the Bianconeri secured a crucial two-goal advantage in the last-16 first leg – a match he won’t be forgetting in a hurry.

“I’m delighted to score of course, and even more pleased about the win,” he beamed after the final whistle.

“2-0 is a great result to take back to our place, but we must remain focused – it only takes a moment for everything to flip on its head in football. We’ll need to be really careful in the return leg.”

The Croatian starlet won’t have done his claims for a starting berth any harm with his 72nd-minute strike but he’s not getting carried away.

“It’s the gaffer’s job to pick the team. All I can do is play my game and try to perform to the very best of my ability.”
