UEFA CL: Dybala living childhood dream

“I’ve dreamt of games like this ever since I was a child. We’re brimming with confidence but we know it will be tough at Camp Nou”

Paulo Dybala was rightly buzzing after scoring two goals in Juve’s 3-0 victory over Barcelona and admitted that nights like this are the sort he used to dream of as a kid.

“We were amazing tonight and we’ve got ourselves an excellent result to take into the return leg,” the Argentine star began.

“I’ve dreamt of experiencing games like this ever since I was a child.

“We’re brimming with confidence now and that’ll help as we strive to achieve our targets.

“We can’t afford to relax, though. It’s going to be tough at Camp Nou but we’re a great team and we’re all really up for it.”

Champions League: Buffon: “A fraction of a second”

The skipper comments on that save and looks ahead to the return leg: “Recent history tells us we’re not through yet but we’re very happy tonight”

“Just doing my job.” That was Gigi Buffon’s explanation for the wonder save he pulled out to deny Andres Iniesta in the first half of Juve v Barca.

A goal at that stage would have made it 1-1 and may well have sent the game in a very different direction. Yet, while admitting that it was an important save, our No.1 was reluctant to bask in the glory.

“That’s what we’re here for. I’m lucky enough to play for a fantastic team and I have to keep demonstrating that I’m good enough to play at this level.

“It was a big save, though, because of the time when it came and the difficulty of the save itself. It comes down to a fraction of a second but, as I said, I have to pull off saves like that if I want to keep being considered a top keeper.”

Feelings on return leg

“The feelings are positive. This was no fluke result today. We deserved it and we have no reason to fear anyone.

“We played our game and showed what we’re capable of but you only have to look at the PSG match to remember that we must be careful. We’re happy, but we’re not through yet.

“One thing’s for sure: we’re not afraid of playing on the biggest European stages.”

Dybala among the best

“Paulo has improved enormously over the last two years. He could well be up there among the top five players in the world.”

Champions League: Allegri, “We’ll need to score at Camp Nou”

The boss’s verdict on Juve v Barca: “We were excellent both defensively and going forward”

It’s not over yet and Massimiliano Allegri knows it, despite a magnificent 3-0 first-leg triumph over Barcelona.

“I’m not going to put a percentage on our chances of going through; all I’ll say is we’ll have to score at Camp Nou,” the boss insisted after the game.

Not that he was in the mood for playing down his side’s display, as goals by Paulo Dybala and Giorgio Chiellini handed the Bianconeri a healthy advantage to take to Spain next week.

“We were excellent tonight, we really were – both defensively and going forward,” Allegri continued.

“We have a fine mix of technical and physical attributes. The lads are improving all the time and they deserve everything they’ve managed to achieve.

“We’ve made some big strides forward – thanks to the club, obviously – and the best proof of that is that we now command respect in Europe.

“It’s a big result tonight because we’ve done exactly what we were looking to do. We’ve shown people that we can hold our own in games like this.”

Match analysis

“We read the game well in the first half. If I have to find a fault, we were sometimes too hurried in trying to get the ball forward when we could have laid it off. We’ll remember that going into the return leg.

“As I said though, the lads were really switched on tonight, cutting out Barca’s passing lanes and watching the runners. We were great going forward too. Our passing was good and we played intelligently.”

Dybala and the squad

“Paulo is a great player and he was magnificent today, but I’m delighted with the whole lot of them because they really were superb. We have strength throughout the squad and that’s especially important in this period with all the games we have to play one after another. They all have a big part to play.”

Match report: Flawless Juve stun Barcelona, 11 April 2017

Advantage Bianconeri as Paulo Dybala and Giorgio Chiellini set up a pulsating 3-0 win over Barcelona at Juventus Stadium

Two flashes of brilliance from Paulo Dybala, 90 minutes of football of the very highest quality, a record sellout Juventus Stadium crowd, a night that confirmed the Bianconeri’s credentials as Champions League contenders.

The impeccable home side had the lead within seven, had doubled it within 22 and had taken the game beyond the reach of an off-colour Barcelona within 55. At full-time, players and fans alike were free to reflect on a flawless performance.

It was the invention and unerring finishing of Dybala that set the Old Lady on course to victory, but it was the focus, concentration and organisation of the 14 black and white shirts to have taken to the field that saw her home.

The signs were there from the first whistle. Roaring out of the blocks, the Italian champions fed off an electric atmosphere in Turin and immediately took the game to Luis Enrique’s Barca with Gonzalo Higuain, Dybala, Juan Cuadrado and Mario Mandzukic – reunited in the forward positions – wreaking havoc with their energy and movement.

It wasn’t long before the Blaugrana goal was under threat. Sami Khedira shot over the bar from the edge of the box and Higuain could only direct a header straight at Marc-André ter Stegen from Miralem Pjanic’s curling free-kick inside five minutes.

Sure enough, with their next attack, Juve took the lead thanks to Dybala’s ingenuity. Receiving the ball from Cuadrado on the right-hand channel in a packed penalty box, the Argentine ducked, weaved and dug the ball out from his feet to curl a fabulous finish into the far corner.

He was at it again 15 minutes later. Moments after Gianluigi Buffon’s instinctive block had miraculously denied Andrès Iniesta from equalising, the Bianconeri were back on the offensive with the inexhaustible Mandzukic. The Croatian’s drive to the byline and precise cut-back put the ball on a plate for Dybala to sweep home clinically inside the near post.

The inevitable wave of Blaugrana jerseys flooded black and white territory for the remainder of the half, yet defensive duo Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci, both superb throughout, stood firm.

Juve might have even entered the break with a three-goal advantage, ter Stegen palming away Higuain’s awkward, bouncing volley and Bonucci narrowly missing Khedira’s cross-cum-shot with his head.

Barca posed a greater scoring threat early in the second period, Lionel Messi sliding a shot wide before a heavy touch from Luis Suarez when played through on goal allowed Buffon to rush from his line to smother, but their spell of influence would not last long.

Just as they had done in the first half, Massimiliano Allegri’s men chose their moments to move forward to perfection and were soon rewarded with a monumental and richly deserved third goal.

Goalkeeper ter Stegen, much the busier of the two on the night, did well to keep out a pair of well-struck Higuain efforts on the counter attack, but could do nothing about Chiellini who beat Javier Mascherano for strength, planted his feet and guided a header into the far corner via the upright.

But the drama was far from finished. A rare piece of link-up play between Messi and Suarez put the Uruguayan one-on-one with Buffon on the angle, only for the skipper to somehow better his first-half intervention, brushing his fingers on the ball to turn it around the post.

Defensive reinforcements arrived in the form of Mario Lemina, Tomas Rincon and Andrea Barzagli as Barca began to squeeze Juve back into their own territory and the home side could only watch Samuel Umtiti mistime his jump unmarked in the penalty area 10 minutes from time.

It would prove to be the only lapse in concentration on behalf of the Old Lady with Chiellini, Alex Sandro and Buffon all producing critical defensive interventions in and around the danger zone as the clock slowly ticked towards full time.

A beautifully managed four minutes of stoppage time came and went to bring an end to a pulsating night of football at Juventus Stadium. A spectacular showing and three massive first-leg goals.

We do it all again in eight days’ time…
